Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AVP and above with no direct reports

Poking around in webphone, pulled some reports, there are 223 AVP’s and above that have no direct reports. Giving away the big $$ for nothing. Perhaps HR should put some focus in that direction.

"they have trouble concentrating and doing important work because of all the noise and banter,"

I negotiate contracts, often with companies that have contractors in our groups. There is no privacy, and we do not know who is a contractor vs a regular employee that is sitting around us. I have had to ask several people I don't recognize that sits around me to identify whether they are employees or not, and tell them that contactors cannot sit around me or our group. It is ridiculous.

It has to do with pay scale. Look at the pay scale for any L2 job. Do you think a corporate lawyer gets paid that little?

The majority of people I talk to in Dallas and Bedminster feel the office situation is a mess, they have trouble concentrating and doing important work because of all the noise and banter, and we're a lot of time looking for a workspace...other opinions???

Had someone in Thaddeus org very unintelligently try to explain why AVPs and directors with no direct reports was “justified”. Absolute clownery.

It's a heavy AVP population in Legal. That's why you get into meetings with them and there are 35 lawyers all with different opinions. Big reason why nothing gets done around here.

When they reallocated the titles last year, they actually removed the "Distinguished" titles that were L4 individual contributors and lumped them together with the AVP title. The "Distinguished Member" title doesn't really have a home in mobility since it was a holdover title from the Research Scientist titles in the old ATT labs. Development of this type hasn't taken place in mobility since the vendors do our development, and we just figure out how to integrate.

@ae if it’s in Atlanta I know who you are talking about.

In their defense , due to too much noise they are not able to concentrate on the important calls

we have AVPs in Legg org sitting in a huddle room all day long because they don't want to sit out on the floor with the rest of us.

Bingo! They need to scrap that entire (costly, extraneous) layer!

Are they attorneys, government relations, or similar jobs?

I'll bet they are...
