Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Really? This is how we spend our time?

Water and batteries are not friends, just sayin’

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a vehicular water generation system, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on December 1st, 2020, published on November 29th, 2022, and assigned serial number 11512010.

The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed patents for both a seat assembly with a liquid sanitizer system and a vehicle water heating system, offering owners some potentially convenient features on the go. Now, this new Ford patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a vehicular water generation system, which would be capable of collecting water in liquid form, which would be generated from the condensation of water vapor.

The system outlined in this Ford patent would utilize a number of filters and containers that could collect and clean these vapors, as well as an ultraviolet light. Additionally, the water could be cooled or agitated if so desired, making it suitable for a variety of uses. But perhaps the biggest use case for such an idea is making simple drinking water, which is what this patent is aimed at generating.

Aside from providing a portable water source for the vehicle’s owners no matter where they might be – whether that be on the road or traversing some remote territory while off-roading or camping – such an idea is also quite green, and could also help conserve water, which is a precious resource. Even though it may not make a considerable amount of drinkable water, the condensation generated would otherwise go to waste, which makes this particular idea a pretty interesting one – and we can imagine a future where we can simply snag a cool bottle of water from our vehicle on demand, which sounds pretty convenient as well.

Don’t drink the condensation Kool-Aid. Waste of time and energy while our quality tanks. Whoever approved this (and other whimsy’s) should be fired.

I agree with everything you said... I got a chuckle about the sensor to remind us to check for our children in the back seat...

Personally, I think the alcohol detection system is worth further consideration. I personally know that the cost estimation has so much padding, that the costs that OEMs say prevent it from being added to full production volumes are just not true. It could be done affordably and the high volume would only decrease the costs.

Of course, drunks would still figure out workarounds, but I think it's a solid idea.

When I read the previous post about 'wet seat detection system' I laughed... I am pretty sure we're all equipped with one of those - it's called an @$$ lol.

And mounting an airbag to the bottom of the seat? That sounds dangerously close to the old cartoons / Acme ejection seats. I'm picturing someone bumping my car in a parking lot and my driver seat bottom mount airbag fires me off into the stratosphere... I hope they at least equip buyers with a parachute haha.

Condensation doesn't go to waste. It evaporates into the air and the whole cycle starts over again. It's as of people left their brains in their mom's womb.

Never buying a new car again. Too many non-value gimmicks and things that can go wrong causing costly repairs. Example, the ABS sensor is now part of the wheel bearing assembly, not part of the brake rotor. Nanny state engineering has taken over the industry. Sensors to remind people that they have left there kids in the car and now we all have bear more cost as alcohol sensors are mandated in all new vehicles. New cars do not have the features and functions I value. New cars have boring styling, everything is a box.

Why can’t we just build cars and trucks that are dependable and trusted by customers.

We are now the gimmick company, selling sizzle instead of steak.

Ford has filed a large number of seat-related patents in recent months, including one for a seat assembly with a pivotable armrest and airbag, a wet seat detection and mitigation system, a seat assembly with a liquid sanitizer system, a seat bottom mounted airbag that protects pets, a fully automatic seat positioning system, a seatback-mounted overhead airbag, and interchangeable seat cushions. Now, this new Ford patent continues that trend by introducing an idea for transformable rear seats.

While rear seats typically just fold down or completely flat on command, this new Ford patent makes this ages-old auto part exponentially more useful and flexible. Certain automakers – most notably Land Rover – have long made vehicles that have rear-facing seats present in the tailgate, however, which allow occupants to have a picnic or tailgate without bringing along a set of chairs, and that’s somewhat what this patent alludes to.

In the patent drawings, we can see that the rear seat – not a built in bench – is able to move and double as a rear-facing unit when the tailgate is folded down. There’s also a track assembly mounted in the floor that the seats are attached to, so that they can slide forward and backward as desired. As such, owners can quickly flip the seats between a traditional, forward-facing position and a rear-facing position.

Can't wait to see what the recall looks like on this feature!
