Thread regarding Windstream Corp. layoffs

RTO

Notice went out that all central arkansas workers will have to spend at least one day a week in the office soon. The wording of the communication sounded like it will increase once they test the water.

They can do that d-mb shxt in AR... but there's no way that would fly somewhere like SC or NY.

For any WFH that is good, you can bet there's a bad one abusing the benefit. No reason that it should take my dispatcher two hours to respond or Teams. Plenty of people here have already admitted to doing another job while working on from home due to no accountability.

People wanting to go to work are part of the problem? LOL!!!!! No, they aren't the reason managers micro manage. People with control issues micro manage. WFH isn't a bad thing for those who actually work, but many people take advantage of it and if you claim they don't, you're being dishonest. Sure, people can be lazy at the office too, but those people probably nap while WFH. Dedicated people will work no matter where they are, but the lazy WILL do less while WFH.

WFH is actually game changer. Honestly feel better starting my day without sitting traffic worrying about being late or disgruntled from people on the road. I am actually more focused with purpose. Same as the other person I dont need a full hour lunch to get away from people. I can do a mini mindset reset and keep it going. I am not a manager but I fully endorse work from home. Im instantly home with my family without getting home 2 hours later to unwind. Also saves tons of money from driving and wear and tear on my car. Those wanting to go back to the office you are part of the problem. You are probably the reason why managers micromanage.

I don’t work in Arkansas, but have worked from home for years and get glowing performance reviews. Due to being WFH, I am often able to; start work earlier, take 20 to 30 minute lunches often being much shorter, work later if needed (uninterrupted by the hour or more travel time), etc.

@h8 usually because their dispatches are missing information, or they're specifying ports to use that are already in use

@e7 I remember touring Windstream sites and seeing techs sitting and reading the newspaper. There was trash everywhere on the floors including stripped wiring hanging from the raceways and strewed on the floor- cleaning was never considered apparently by the site manager.
But what was really funny was after leaving the site and driving to the next site a few miles down the road, there was the same tech reading his newspaper and drinking his coffee - I guess we disturbed him too much at the first site we visited.

@ct Why would need an engineer to support you, you diss them in most comments. Have you ever learned to work your OTDR and DMM correctly?

Maybe we can put an end to everyone who refuses to put a phone number in their profile and they only want to communiate via teams.. f teams. Get them back in the office and give them a desk phone. It was a great 4 - 5 years for them being able to f around 50% of the day.

@dj I have 20 years in the business at various places. It isn't the zoomers avoiding work it is the 50+ crowd. I remember sitting in accounting and watching the Cash Assurance group come in at 6am. All older ladies and men. They would spend from 6-8am reading the paper and talking. When their director showed up they would get to their desk.

Then the smoke breaks would start. Oh god the smoke breaks. One 20 minutes smoke break an hour. Followed by a two-hour lunch. Then leaving for home at 3pm 'because they came in at 6'. The millennials and zoomers were the ones working the hours and pulling the load. The boomers and Gen X were mostly just waiting for retirement.

Guess the previous response was definitely a zoomer. It's called be an adult and being responsible. If you're late leave a little early to get to work om time. Smoke during your breaks. Bring your own coffee. Have some accountability for yourself. Stop blaming other things for your bad work ethic.

@db did any of you actually work for windstream for any length of time pre-pandemic in an office..

Sure, let's go back to fighting traffic, showing up late, six trips to the breakroom to get more coffee and talk about sports before starting the day at 10am, but not before disappearing into the bathroom for an hour. Now it's time for that 2 hour "work lunch". Smoke breaks, personal calls, nail clippers, constant interruptions from the social cubicle floaters who will do anything but actual work, unhinged coworkers you hope didn't carry the day they're really set off, office politics, passive s-xual harassment, petri dish air during cold/flu season so everyone is either working sick or home sick. What benefits did I miss?

Studies show productivity greatly increased with remote work on average.

https://www.bls.gov/opub/btn/volume-13/remote-work-productivity.htm

Productivity and overall employee enthusiasm will sharply decline as a result of this decision.

Yes! Say goodbye to mowing your yard, walking your pet, watching Netflix, and working your side gig while you are paid to work.

@a2 this is the best company news I have heard in a long time get people back in the office so there is less likelihood when I have to call an engineer for support they don't tell me they're out at the gym or heading out to the park

This will upset anyone under 35. They have no in person social skills and they'll have to actually show up to get a paycheck.

It’s about damn time. Everyone needs to get their a$* back in the office so people can be held accountable and quit goofing off. Maybe finally some work will get done.
