Can someone explain why are there offering positions if they are thinking about rif? Are the rifs in certain departments?

I hugely regret taking this job offer over another. If I could do it over, I would have accepted the other offer. But hey if you like doing 2-3 people’s jobs, constant worry about being RIFd, a 2% increase and a 3% bonus then go ahead and come on over.
I would not jump on board as anything more than a stopgap… if you’re looking and offered a position, until you find a stronger company. The financials are not looking great and yes there will be at least 1 more significant riff before the end of the year.
Better off somewhere else. This place is making cuts that don't make sense unless things are much worse than what they are willing to admit.

@cj will you be required to work in an office for the new position? I am still employed here, every job posting I have reviewed says you are required to be within 50 miles of an office, which I am not. I'm not sure if it is even worth applying because of that.
Why??? Read all the comments. People here are so unhappy, overworked, unappreciated and always worried about being laid off. The job market is tough right now. I would leave in a heartbeat if I could find something else. Do yourself a favor and look somewhere else. This used to be a great place to work. Not anymore.
@dv this is the standard and repeating hiring freeze of the 4th quarter - year after year and lifted early December when they realize that they need more staff to handle new business ruining holiday plans for hiring managers, making it next to impossible to be trained by January 1, and in some cases restricting PTO for staff to orient new hires (if you get any) while Directors and above continue the endless PTO they have already used a boatload of all year to this point. Things never change
They seem to lay off the higher paid people, then hire new people at lower starting pay then the person they laid off.

RIFs remain a recurring reality, and avoiding one instance does not eliminate the risk of future occurrences. This pattern is not unique to this organization but is common across large companies in the current hiring environment.
If it sounds like a great offer, certainly consider it. Just go into this or anything with your eyes wide open, and know that there are constant layoffs, constants and reshuffling. Many people, not all feel completely overworked and stressed out. That is true for many but not all. Many people were hired years ago as remote only and now are being let go because they are not near an office when the policy has changed.
Just be aware that anything can change at any time and promises that are made can be broken at will.
Forgot to add I’m a remote employee and not near an office so I’ve been told I won’t be called to the office.
I’ve been an employee over 3 years and am very happy. My team just got moved to another department and it looks like I’m going to have more opportunities for growth and learning. I’m a happy employee. Good luck whatever you decide.
If you are coming in at a grade 15 or higher, and don't have any ethics, it is a great gig, you would get unlimited PTO and can do very little. If below a 15, jobs may be available because they got rid of an older, experienced person and are replacing them with a cheaper hire, or they over-riffed and people quit so they realized they do need to backfill. But know that you could easily end up in a situation where you are doing the work of up to 3 FTE's. In addition, it is highly likely that your manager doesn't know the work that was being done by the person who got riffed. There could be little to no training and you'll be expected to hit the ground running and succeed without the tools or knowledge to do so. Expect high stress, long hours and little to no bonus or advancement potential. Even if hired as remote, they can change it to in office at any time. If you aren't able to compartmentalize and know your own worth it could be a psychologically damaging place. I would worry about younger or inexperienced people because there seems to be a trickle down of anxiety/corporate gaslighting; be prepared to be scapegoated and taken advantage of. If you must take the job, just go in with a mental health game plan. The only positive used to be that at least you had a shared trauma bond with the other people in your foxhole, but I don't know if that bond will be extended to new hires.
My position was RIF'd, The job market is tough right now and I applied for a position a few months ago and recently had an interview and a job offer. I'm making the decision to come back. So yes there are positions that are real, but expect a very long process for the interview process. A few positions I got notification that they were being canceled, and other positions I got a rejection email about a week after applying.
There are regular job boards and then there are hidden job board - linked nowhere on their website but shown on obscure classified ads. This is how companies work the system to bring in cheaper labor.
I think a lot are either ghost jobs or they are already earmarked for an existing employee but have to post the job.

There’s riffs throughout the company (no one is safe), but some depts have more employee cuts than others.
They are offering positions because there’s a need for that particular position and they got funding for it. It’s as simple as that. But this doesn’t mean that the need or funding will stay forever. It could disappear in 6 months or even before the interviews begin. Anything is possible.
