Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Less meetings, more work done

I don't know how the meetings that are totally unnecessary affect you, but afterwards I feel totally drained. Have you ever worked in a company where you had more unproductive meetings? I haven't.

The meetings! I don’t miss these at all! The ones where you listen to a safety/OE moment for 15+ minutes (that took the presenter a week to prepare) and where everyone needs to say something about it to be “heard”. And then the meeting. The round table discussion. And a year later you are still talking about the same thing!!!!!!!

Less meetings would mean less need for many of the middle management positions in the company. Meetings are their ‘make busy’ work. It’s really a place for wasteful time and money. I think Elon Musk is onto something quite obvious here. Let’s see if Chevron pays attention or just waits to follow what Exxon and other peers do.

Only hold meetings that have to do with our work, and that would be fine. We have so many meetings that talk about nothing and get nothing accomplished.

I participate in more meeting now that I can attend all but the most important meetings remotely. During a remote meeting I can get busy work done while still monitoring the conversation for any useful information. Also it would be nice if we refocused the useless safety moments. Safety is important but for most messages the key is “moment”: like one minute. The safety moment should never go on longer that the meeting itself!

Yes, I have worked at places that had even more meetings. No big deal. If you don't like it, there are a lot of people looking for work. Move along and make room for someone else.

Managers especially love meetings because they can get lower PSG folks to take notes for them at said meetings. The holy grail of a gig for them is to just show up at meetings (scheduled and planned by someone else) and then all they have to do is pontificate while someone takes notes of what they say.

Afterwards there is documentation produced which makes them feel something productive happened.

My team asks me to schedule more meetings. I trust them to get their work done without being micromanaged. I also trust that they’ll reach out if they need help. But they want to have the regular pow wow meetings. I hate those. I think there is a big divide in the workforce: those who have a community outside of work and those who consider Chevron to be their primary community.

"Meetings" are called by managers so that it can appear they're doing something meaningful.

I have, and I quit that company to come to Chevron. CVX isn’t perfect, but you can do a lot worse.
