Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Internal positions

For those who are affected, I am wondering whether it is worth to try to get an internal position. As far as I can see, most people think it's just a waste of time.

I haven't heard of anyone getting an internal position.

I did it 6 years ago and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Better product, better manager, and ultimately better pay. I had options outside of Cisco but made the right choice to stay. No regrets.

Don't waste time unless you wear a thread

I know some functions are primarily hiring internal-only, which ups the odds.

This also happens in consulting at Cisco. Our team had an amazing Accenture consultant, and with no notice he was informed his services were no longer needed. He was quietly replaced by a personal friend of our VP with zero experience in the field.

Accenture was forced to hire this VPs personal friend and assign him to Cisco. It's all about strategic relationships if you want a paycheck.

Just need to be Indian and you will get another internal job. This is true for at least engineering roles

yep they make you go to pointless interviews where you're perfectly qualified only to get typical rejection message from the recruiter afterwards.

I have heard that those with strong connections get instant offer without going through interview process. I would say 90% of the internal job postings have people they want to hire already and the listing and fake interview is just to make it seem like there is a formal hiring process so the company doesn't get audited.

I hear the resume and training services are excellent, use those to full extent to prepare for external opportunities. Don't think 1% are hitting on internal positions. LOTS of postings though, if that counts for anything.

Definitely not! Do not reapply, in fact it would be wise to switch career paths ASAP.

I wouldn’t say it’s a waste, but the odds are probably against you. I know some very talented people who have been unable to land anything internal, including me.

If you are going to try, I’d just hope you are putting as much or more time into searching externally.
