Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Such drawn-out cuts have incalculable consequences

I'd say if you have the means/skill move while you can unless you been there for a while and would welcome a severance. I've never seen anything this weird or drawn out. MSFT, Facebook, Amazon. They go the rip the bandaid off approach. Intel on the other hand goes, "Just make sure to check your email for a 1:1 from your manager every morning". I think the CHIPS act is complicating things and Intel is trying to bleed people off slowly to avoid a big headline drawing questions.
I guess the longer it's drawn out, they might save money from attrition not having to pay severance.

OP @1wtv+1kLbYzu9 : I agree, probably the goal is to save some money on attrition, but what are the consequences of such drawn-out layoffs? I hope the leadership is thinking about that too.

Intel has botched layoffs of both the drawn-out and shotg-n variety. It’s not so much the downsizing style that matters to the long term health of the company, but the execution.

Intel has a history of big layoffs and drawn out processes. The consequences are short lived. When the process is over the remaining employees are too busy moving forward with less people to think much about it. A benefit of having less people is that management sometimes streamlines meetings and processes so that there is less waste of time.

Agree. The goals are to (1) avoid headlines and the resulting backlash from taking taxpayer money and laying people off and (2) hope that pressure and voluntary exit opportunities will lessen the severance costs.

It’s not unprecedented though. Many of the old layoffs would be hatched and publicized in one quarter, fleshed out in the second quarter, and implemented in a third quarter. Those episodes took place across a 7 to 8 month span.

Hang in there, everyone, and push yourself to make conscious decisions rather than sit passively and wait for sh*t to happen.
