Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Quiet Firing & Gentlemen’s Layoffs

Interesting stat from an article in Forbes Mag: Your boss might be hoping you quit because it’s easier and cheaper than firing you

Using attrition vs laying off.

“2 day a week office requirement = 20% voluntary departures,” Calacanis wrote to Musk, calling the tactic a form of “gentlemen’s layoffs.”

Wonder how much Ford anticipates.

The main problem with the gentlemen's layoffs is the company tend to lose its best people. It is easier for the best employees to find another job than all those deadwoods we carry. And after employees start looking for another job, their morale and interest in the current position plummet.

Another issue with the gentlemen's layoff is, that the company doesn't know who/when is going to quit. The lack of control on the workforce, the untimed departures, make it harder to plan properly and/or meet deadlines.

As I see it, forcing employees to quit is a very myope short term solution, with long term consequences.
