Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Skills Assessment linked to Layoffs?

Everyone in Legg org just got an email that we are Required to update our skills in Career Path by 1/31. Meanwhile Legg org layoffs are underway, impacted individuals were notified with off-payroll date 1/31/23. But our group was also told HR is “still reviewing the numbers and cannot rule out possibility of another round of layoffs”. Seems too coincidental the mandatory skills update is happening now. Does anyone know (not speculation) if these skills assessments will be used for next round of layoffs?

Of course they are going to be used - notice the only ones required are the ‘new set’ labeled with the ATS prefix.
Assume they will be used for layoffs as well as pushing some training for others.

The skills assessment is nonsensical and has software that has not been used in some cases in 20 plus years? I wonder who created the outdated skill set
choices as they make no sense. Also, some of the applications it is asking about are legacy not even target architecture apps and those that are TA are missing. It is illogical.

Post from TheLayoff.com

This is true. Based on the descriptions and being honest with myself, I have to rate myself lower in basically every category than is my inclination.

Skills assessment, hahaha 😝.

This is assuming T management has the capability to measure skills & performance. Just look at those who are still here and promoted and those in executive ranks. No my friends, meritocracy had been long died.

Layoffs are coming in the JLegg org. what is insane is that new employee hires will mostly be in India. This came straight from JL. What a company!

This is because some parts of India subsidize or cover the salary for a year, managers make 9k per year in India without subsidies, and T can deduct the relocation costs on taxes thanks to the GOP tax cuts.

" exaggerate your skills and identify as many that allow you to be the best choice to replace others. Identify key unique skills that supervisor needs and others lack. Such as "help others with problems in their area".

If you think this skills assessment is in an important factor in determining whether or not you're going to be laid off, you are very gullible.

ATT making decisions on talent using a system where a person self proclaims they have a certain level of proficiency. It has been a year or two since I completed the task. If one would read the doc on how the rating scale is to be used I think many would find they overrated themselves.

Most of those at the AVP and above have very little technical skills! They have to be spoon fed information and propped up!!

AM's have already provided stack rankings for this round. Skills assessment will help with the next round of cuts.

OP here, I should have mentioned the email requiring us to update our skills by 1/31 came directly from Legg himself. “Our ATS labor strategy is to use in-house expertise instead of vendors…we must know your skills”. Could be that this is sincere, or could be another way to rank undesired employees, which do you think?

These skills inventories are meaningless, do you think Legg or any of his executives are going to re-shuffle people based on needed skills...doubt it.. the email pretty much stated what this is for.

They want to ax contractors first and make sure there's no huge gap in any particular skill area. In other words they don't want to fire boat loads of Azure admins only to realize no one in the division has enough azure skills.

Irrespective of these skills inventory reorg is coming and with it a lot more layoffs... We had a couple of quiet years since the pandemic , now that the Fed has turned off the easy money spigot, the beatings will commence

Skills assessment is a joke. You can assess your skills anyway you like...grade yourself up or down. HR is not using a user defined skills inventory to pick and choose.

Layoffs are almost entirely determined by your immediate supervisor. The AVP gives the director a request for X names based on his sense of who has the most slack (there may be some give and take) if there's a second line the same process happens. Your supervisor then decides who he least needs. He's going to be held to the same workload, because HR won't let him drop work without the clients ok. If there's a couple people that he could go without he'll choose the ones that are the biggest pains in the a-s. Then he's responsible to make up the story for why you were chosen and that passes up the line. No cares about your skills inventory.

ACE West was told specifically “skills” would be one criteria used to determine who gets to stay and who leaves.
