Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Pathetic life of H1B

I understand H1B gives a threat to US Citizens. But they are less threat compared to Offshoring projects completely.
So what challenges these H1B's face. They are slaves to Citizens, they are slaves to offshore teams. There are good technical people but are completely enslaved. For changing to new company, they have to transfer their visa's and do a complete immigration process again. Every time, they visit their country with fear of returning back. Many miss friends and family functions, deaths. Living a life of fear of job loss, visa loss and not buying home or car. Adjust to a bad manager and organization. Listening to their threats and laughing for non-sense jokes. H1B's miss their promotions to offshore teams. They are ok to live on 2-3% hikes. I can hardly count an H1B who got promotion in Oracle beyond PMTS role. Oracle really did discrimination using visa.
Even if H1B’s spouse get a temporary EAD, its hard to find permanent positions with these temporary EADs. Many H1B spouses face home sick, their talents are lost between four walls.
The other biggest challenge now is the company which layoff can't file for immigration petition for their H1B's for a while. And the life is in limbo state if their stay is expiring.
Lets try to help our H1B friends in mid of these layoffs.
Managers and Executives, please think twice/thrice before layoff a H1B who served you for years.

For all those who think H1 visa holders are the reason you lost your job, try answering this question and it will give you some insight :

Amazon hired 800k employees in the last 2 years. Do you know how many were H1 visa holders?
Salesforce hired close to 35k employees in the last 2 years. Do you know how many of these were H1 holders?
H1 application details is public data and you can easily find it if you look.
Answers to the above questions will give you real perspective on how trivial H1 numbers are compared to the total number of jobs .

"I understand H1B gives a threat to US Citizens. But they are less threat compared to Offshoring projects completely" - laughed out loud when I read it. Although one shouldn't really tar all H1Bs with the same brush, a substantial portion actively tried to undermine both offshore teams and local workers, when the going was good. And now that the chickens are coming home to roost, this sudden sympathy for US citizens is so hypocritical that it is almost nauseating.

Let’s put a STOP to this ridiculous back and forth about H1Bs. They’re here to stay UNLESS Congress does something about it. And I highly doubt anything will be done.

So yes, H1Bs will continue to shamelessly take away jobs from much more qualified US workers. So get used to this, will only continue no matter how mad you are about it.

My suggestion- Find a better place to work at, one that actually cares about American workers. That’s what I’ve done. Oracle does not care.

“ Remarkable how there are H1Bs here on this board cursing Americans. ”

Looking at this thread from outside makes me wonder how the work environment is in the Oracle US offices . People have so much hatred for fellow humans. In Europe, we have several people from other countries , but we don’t treat them like this .

Remarkable how there are H1Bs here on this board cursing Americans. Classy!

How about you H1Bs go back to your homeland? You should be happier there.

BTW - Did a two week consulting gig in India years ago, miserable place, will never go back. I can see why Indians want to get out.

High time for fellow h1b folks to understand the ground rules. Lost my job blame an immigrant, cant do my job

Nice whine, now let me ask you this, do they do this in Japan? Germany? Switzerland? France? Even India? Just try to apply for a job in Japan. I promise your resume will end up in /dev/null with a nice form letter rejecting you. In no other country do they allow such blatant behavior to go on. Everyone keeps deflecting that elephant in the room. So yes, people are rightly upset that the H1B is kept while the Domestic employee is let go. If you don't like it, stay home. Nobody is forcing you to come to work. If America and Americans are that bad, the door opens both ways with equal ease.
Might be harsh, but I am fed up with H1B holders , and whatever trolls are acting as proxy, acting like they are owed this. Let the trolls' downvoting begin.

High time for fellow h1b folks to understand the ground rules. Lost my job blame an immigrant, cant do my job , give it an immigrant, lets have racist rants - find an immigrant. H1bs are cheap labor , but when proven h1bs get paid more in the company now h1bs are taking high paying jobs. Mo--ns are at large these days. At the end of the day all these just motivate me to sharp my skills even more make sure I am the best at what I do. Oracle actually send people to canada if they are important enough and visa is rejected. Companies never fire genuin good people and the job goes with him. Mo--ns will stay mo--n ranting.

Companies lied about not being able to find workers so the

government would allow them to hire H1B workers for cheaper wages. This was never about not finding people to fill these jobs.

Oh it is long passed writing letters. you have to vote these people out. Find good candidates who make fixing this horrible system a priority. Vote enough in the rest of the sheep get the message.Let's face it, most politicians are moral and ethical cowards.

I will greatly acknowledge this is the case in many companies, so I will not argue that point by any means, but not all. I know of a few companies, located in isolated in Southern US counties that are having a hard time finding and holding talent. But I won't bury my head in the sand and think companies are not lying and trying to get H1B workers at the expense of domestic talent. We need to change the laws to make companies to show real cause. But again that starts with the politicians. Why do you think our immigration laws are such a mess? Written by lawyers for lawyers. Immigration law is the biggest scam going. I can tell you this from personal experience. Why won't they fix them. THEY DON'T WANT TO. They just give you lip service but in the end do nothing.

Let’s start calling out executive names that have been replacing US citizens with H1bs and transferring employees from India to US on L1b visas. My take is these executives are more comfortable using enslaved labor workforce so donot bother to keep any US natives in the org. It is not hard to see every VPs org and count the number of US native employees left.

I'm not sure the poster even is an H1B. Sounds like a troll.
I've worked with plenty of H1B holders. We sponsor them, transfer their H1Bs, sponsor their green cards. And pay them the appropriately for their grade.

Why do we do it? Because it IS hard to find talent. Actual talent. Talent means being a highly competent engineer, being knowledgeable about the domain, having a solid history, and doing well in an interview. Bonus if you have a reference from a known-good existing employee.

Why do we pay competitively? People talk about abuse and low pay, but I've never seen that. I'm not denying it happens, but certainly not within my direct experience. A bad hire isn't worth the drama, and a good hire can take their H1B to a better company. If you don't know: getting the H1B approved in the first place, and getting the employee over here is the hard part. Getting an H1B transfer approved is relatively straightforward. So it's best to pay well and treat the employee with respect.

Why do employees stay? They want the work, the pay, the benefits, and they want the green card. And if they don't get it, they'll walk.

There are a few years between H1B renewals where an H1B can feel tethered to their current company as a soon-to-expire visa can be viewed as a negative. On the other hand, once a green card application proceeds beyond a certain point, it's pretty much a done deal and the employee is very mobile.

I've worked as an engineer for different well known Bay Area companies for about 30 years now, and the only people I see complaining about H1Bs are low-skill employees who we let go and who have a hard time finding work, low grade employees who don't like foreigners being above them, non-Bay Area people who simply haven't been exposed to such a diverse environment, and, let's say it, racists who think they haven't got what they think they're due and want someone else to blame.

@1ftf+1kUPgUja - If you're a US citizen, just try to land a job in another other developed country, including your beloved India. You won't get a job, no way! Why? Because nearly all developed countries, except the USA, have super strict laws on hiring foreigners. Companies have to jump through many hoops to convince their government that a foreigner has a job skill that cannot be found locally. These laws are there to protect their own citizens. More often than not, these requests will be denied by their governments. But here in the USA, we just let in H1Bs as if we're one giant Welcome Wagon.

Stop acting so high-and-mighty with your condemning others who have lost or may soon lose their IT jobs to foreign nationals. SHOW SOME COMPASSION FOR THEM,. Their concerns are real and justified. You'd change your tune if you got whacked after training an H1B to do your job.

Have you sunk that low that you would remark on another nationality and the ability to be able to work sucessfully in this country. Home of the free and the brave. BE NICE!!! We are all human, we come in every shape, size, and walk of life.. I beg you show compassion..

This H1B poster wants empathy from us, but nowhere does he show empathy towards the tens of thousands of US citizens who have been dumped to the curb while companies like Oracle continue to bring in more H1Bs. But H1Bs don't care one iota about US citizens, do they? Just snag jobs away that they should have no business having in the first place.

It's true that the only solution is for those in DC to do their jobs by passing laws to clamp down on H1B hiring. But what are we OURSELVES able to do to "pressure" them? Write letters to our reps in Congress and express our demands? Give us all a friggin' break, won't do a thing!

And BTW - Don't believe me that Oracle has hired H1Bs to excess? Then take a leisurely stroll around the Austin campus on a warm sunny day at lunchtime. Welcome to "Bangalore West".

What world are you living in? Lets have an honest conversation here.
Companies lied about not being able to find workers so the
government would allow them to hire H1B workers for cheaper wages. This was never about not finding people to fill these jobs.

There are plenty of Americans that would love to do the work but they wont hire them because they don't supposedly have the qualifications.
Qualifications don't seem to matter when it comes to American workers.
It is all about money. and how much more the CEOs can cram in their pockets.

I was there when this all started. Americans had to train these people with NO qualifications or experience to take their jobs. They did not know how to do the work. It was literally a paid apprenticeship. Companies paid cheaper wages and they got money from the government for each foreign worker that they hired. They had no regard for Americans born here with families to support and the people that had built these companies. They just laid them off.

How people can continue to repeat the lie about H1B workers being hired for cheaper wages is unreal. This is no longer the case. In the beginning companies thought they were being smart but it backfired on them. H1B workers learned very quickly that they could manipulate the system.
They demanded higher wages and now they make more than Americans ever did before this all started.

The worst thing that has happened in the technology field is H1B workers have been allowed to take over the IT industry and push American workers almost completely out. Companies allowed them to be promoted to management positions. In turn, they only hire other H1B workers. This is discrimination and illegal and yet it is still being allowed.

It is almost impossible to get a good paying IT job now if you were born in this country. Don't believe me? Just look at companies like Credit Suisse and Bank of America, as an example. Whole departments of nothing but H1B workers. You cannot tell me that you were not able to find even one American worker.

“ If you want to fix this hold the politicians feet to the fire and pressure them to tighten the laws on the books and level the playing field. Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter, they are all equally horrible. Hold them ALL accountable. ALL OF THEM.“

Finally someone talking sense . Most other responders here sound insecure and naive living in their own little world , unaware of what’s actually happening to them . The only thing they have is hatred in their heart for H1 holders.

Post ID: @1boa+1kUPgUja

I get why the H1B program was started. To help growing companies fill jobs that they otherwise cannot fill with domestic talent. Great, makes sense. But unfortunately, like any other tool, if it can be used, it can be abused and now it has transformed to finding low cost overseas talent at the expense of the domestic Who just want to be paid prevailing wage. Those affected are naturally not happy because of it as you would assume a country would try its best to protect and put its own citizens first. This isn't the fault of the H1B visa holder put the fault of the corporations promoting this and the crooked shiftless politicians who will chase every $5 bill that gets dragged through DC that pass these laws.

If you want to fix this hold the politicians feet to the fire and pressure them to tighten the laws on the books and level the playing field. Democrat or Republican, it doesn't matter, they are all equally horrible. Hold them ALL accountable. ALL OF THEM.

I agree with others about the so-called “plight” of H1Bs. Why ARE you complaining? Countless American citizens have been RIFd by the boatload while yet more H1Bs keep getting brought in to the USA by weasel companies like Oracle. This is why complaints by H1Bs will largely fall on deaf ears on this comment board.

You don’t like it here in the United States? Then go back home. Stop acting entitled. You are not on a leash, are you? No one is forcing you to stay here.

Where are the Indian tech companies with global impact? Tata, etc job shops don’t count.

Where is the Indian google, Facebook, AWS or some tech innovation we’ve not even thought of yet?

Why is Satya N leading US company Microsoft and not an Indian tech company?

People from India have been my colleagues, customers, supervisors, medical providers, neighbors etc for decades now, in life, tech companies and other work. They are people, some good, some bad. Some brilliant, some average. Point is, people are people.

I just don’t under stand it. I really thought there would be credible tech competition from India by now.
