I've been getting it really bad lately. I see some people laughing and saying they hope it's them.
But not me. I have a family. I don't want to lose my job.

it is hard...I got a WARN letter in 2005, we were 2 years into a mortgage. I learned a lot of new things, got a MBA and moved on to many different dept at VZW...
2023 - getting ready to retire
BE FLEXIBLE
Start interviewing and see the market. VZ pay is good, but even if you get offers for less it will give you confidence that in worst case scenario it is not the end of the world
I’ve been looking for for a long time and also found that for what I do no one pays near what VZ does. So I just cut back on hours, don’t work 24x7, and wait to get RIFed till I find something new.
I tried to get another job but nobody pays this much
1vkh I'm glad to hear the rebadge worked out for you. The rebadge was so mismanaged, I find it had to believe Shankar is still employed there. He must of cut a deal with Hans to implement Hans rebadge in return for keeping his overpaid job for years to come. Shankar sold out his friends from GTE. Infosys got the better of Verizon in that deal.
Best thing that happened to me was being rebadged, no more worries about losing my job anymore.
As the sole breadwinner, I used to be terrified of being laid off. Now, if it happens I will be ok. I recommend everyone always have a backup plan. Keep your resume and linkedin updated. Take advantage of Verizon's tuition and get certified programs.
I get major anxiety over layoffs. I have great work life balance right now with flexibility. And I get 6 weeks of PTO. I’m not going to get that elsewhere.
I was laid off in the Q4 RIF. I was looking prior to seeing the rumors here, and the search just amplified the closer it got. Even though it was kind of a joke amongst the team it was coming, when it was actually announced to us I was shocked. It took some time to grasp with reality. You feel this urge to tell close friends and family but not really sure what to do. You'll probably reach out to some folks on LinkedIn or other colleagues out of desperation but the reality is you should a) always be looking for something better regardless of your current standing and b) be prepared. Despite the generous severance package I wanted to hit the ground running. Uncertainty is a ki-ler. You can joke about the situation but I empathize with the family and expenses. Just start using any downtime to look for jobs and interview. At least you're hybrid or remote...imagine being in an office full time and having to sneak around to take calls or find time to interview.
Apply Apply Apply! 20 jobs a day minimum. Make it your job and get out of Verizon...it truly does suck.
You’re not alone. I love my job here. I have a great work/life balance and still contribute a substantial amount of work to my role/the company. I’m very grateful for the amount of growth I’ve had since working here and want to continue. I don’t love our current upper leadership, but it’s not something I’m not willing to wait out. It would pain me beyond belief if I were riffed knowing there are so many people who want to leave the company.
So quit and go get another job. DERP...
I used to have anxiety about getting rif'd. I've been here so long now that my anxiety is now about NOT getting rif'd.
Either way it's something that you can't fully control so worrying won't help. Just prepare as best you can in case it does happen
If you really put close to 20k a year into your 401k for 30 years you have nothing at all to worry about. You must be in higher level management to be able to afford that.
Nope. I have 30 years. Maxed out my 401k since day one. Is it down. Sure. 4 years from social security. No worries at all. This isn’t a job for life. Get paid, don’t give 101% because at the end of the day when they tap you to leave, don’t be the one going, way did I work 50 and 60 hours a week. They don’t care. Why should you!!!!
I still get anxiety during this time every year. Going on 24+ years with the company. I would be at the max severance but still very stressful.
Working here is like constantly swimming against the tide. Sadly RIFs are a part of Verizon's culture and should be added to the Credo.
How long have you been with the company? I get anxiety during typical layoff times (like now…lol). But, I am constantly working to up skill as well as trying to be ready for whatever is next. 15+ yrs so severance would be good, but I’d rather stay. I am with ya…it’s tough. Have been through a layoff and was fortunate to land something better and able to stay. People say it always works out, but yeah, the stress is real.
