Dehumanize (Merriam-Webster Definition)

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “dehumanize” in the following way:

To deprive (someone or something) of human qualities, personality, or dignity, such as:

  1. To subject (someone, such as a prisoner) to inhuman or degrading conditions or treatment
  1. To address or portray (someone) in a way that obscures or demeans that person's humanity or individuality
  1. To remove or reduce human involvement or interaction in (something, such as a process or place)

Nothing here seems to equate to hot-desking. Can we give the utterly massive sense of entitlement a break? Calling the new office plan “dehumanizing” is ridiculously overheated.

@3pad Everything from hot-desking to paper cups have been described as “dehumanizing” on this board.

Your fundamental human rights are not being violated by an uncomfortable seating arrangement. The only that thing that exceeds the ridiculousness of the assertion in magnitude is the astronomical sense of entitlement that enables it.

Grow up, and get over yourselves.

@wbq+1kf5wJao, someone mentioned that hot-desking alone was not dehumanizing, but some parts of the process can be (for example, telling people they can no longer display personal items). That is true.

you cry babies should quit if hot desking is so terrible for you. go somewhere else, just go. the fact that you whine about it on a layoff board where people are worried about being laid off proves that you have it so good and that you can't get a job anywhere else.

@eij Take this reply as one that pertains to your comment and everyone else who might agree with it.

The level of entitlement required to describe an uncomfortable workplace seating arrangement as “dehumanizing” is, for lack of any better description, utterly stupefying.

Your humanity is in no way compromised by hot-desking. The language around this so overheated that it attains the level of satire. All of you need a reality check.

If you really think hot-desking to be dehumanizing, then you must fear for your safety on some level. In that case, file a complaint with OSHA or the DoL. Their reps will most likely send you a 2-3 sentence reply politely telling you get over yourselves.

You people are a joke.

There are levels of dehumanization, and while hot-desking in of itself may not be dehumanizing, the changes that go along with it can most definitely be.

When discussing with my manager, I was told that when we start hot-desking, I need to take down all my family photos and personal items every day and put them in my assigned locker. That might not sound like a huge ask but removing personal expression is one well known tactic used to dehumanize a worker.

People forget how lucky we actually are to even live in America, st a time when we have unprecedented world peace etc etc etc

Now, not to say the company is great at how it has maintained benefits, and so on but talk of the company dehumanizing is ridiculous.

We are having our benefits and nice to have stripped, I agree, and it does need to stop. But also realise we are not being dehumanized etc. the entitlement comment is somewhat justified.

Downvote away - I get it. But come on, be a little realistic.

If you are under the impression that a white collar job comes with a small desk at which to sit and individualize, then yes…..taking away a desk is dehumanizing.

When you spend 10 hours a day in your work environment, it is reasonable to have expectations. I’m glad your expectations are so low that you accept any cr-p they throw at you. Congratulations.

And being that you are at work more waking hours than you are with your family, I fail to believe that your job is purely transactional. Fine, you don’t get satisfaction from a desk. But there is something you get satisfaction from beyond pay. What is it? Posting un-empathetic comments on this board?
