Random Best of Belk awards allegedly discriminatory, could be axed from Belk

Supposedly some former and current managers in North Carolina have spilled the beans on the best of belk awards which usually transpires in March or April. Of course the specific qualifications for the award are still unclear to most associates, and it appears the awards are based on politics and favoritism, which is illegal and can be construed as workplace discrimination. Of course Belk corporate claimed the awards were no different than ‘employee of the month’ but some claim that extra discounts, gratis and other small perks that are given only to select associates are discriminatory and possibly illegal.

If you open up the most credit cards, you are a favorite. The managers receive bonuses.

Awards should be based on top sales, top credit performance, top sth performance. And they should post the numbers so every body sees it. “Mary sold $900,000 last year and opened 200 credits” so there is no confusion or questions into the legitimacy of the award.

@OP Yes All politics and favoritism. If you’re not one of the store manager’s favorites then it doesn’t matter how many votes you got.

Belk Best has become a complete farce, and it's hard to take it seriously anymore. It was supposed to honor associates who actually hit sales quotas—things like credit, customer service, and units per transaction that genuinely showcase hard work and dedication. But now? It’s just a glorified popularity contest. Associates drop names into a box in the break room, and managers randomly pick from it. Surprise, surprise—it's usually the same favorites who end up winning. And if a long-time manager, someone who's been with Belk for 20 years, doesn’t snag the award, you can bet there will be some sulking and bitterness. It’s disheartening to see genuine efforts overlooked in favor of favoritism.
