Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Just moved into new role as a fresh engineer and disliking the role/team

Background, fairly new engineer less than 3 YOE and im on a new team (not by choice) and the team is not what I was expecting it to be. This role/work is better suited for someone with more experience. I want to leave this team already and advice on this

What a great opportunity to learn technical skills, project management skills, and people skills. Stick with it and succeed with this role and you will go far.

Being overwhelmed will be the default condition for the next 10 years. There’s too much work and not enough people. Your colleagues have assumed more workload since 2014 and have coped in different ways. Astonishingly, load employees with more than they can responsibly manage is an oil and gas tradition. Prioritize and manage your cortisol levels…if your face gets puffy go get a weekly Thai massage…all legitimate of course…buy a house so you can feel real pressure.

@OP

Given the stage you are at in your professional career, your “apprehensions” aren't uncommon.

In fact, it may be a good sign - you recognize that you don't know everything. And that's very important. Keep in mind that your superiors don't expect you to know everything.

Most seasoned professionals are usually very willing to help those who are willing to learn.

As @b6+1kqvqnt1a and @ac+1kqvqnt1a have pointed out, being challenged is a good thing and perhaps someone sees your potential.

Stick it out and stay positive.

The job market is atrocious…Terrible
You have a job and there are thousands looking in Houston alone.
Indeed “petroleum engineer” and weep…the job posting at 100/bbl is worse than Covid or the crash of 2015…

Ask for mentorship from someone with more experience, I would use this to my advantage and betterment. Unless you are in a toxic environment I would ride the wave. Getting a higher bar early on is a good fit, again, as long as it is not toxic or bad for you. In the meantime absorb as much as possible and request training and mentorship.

Stick it out, grow into the responsibility. It's good to be challenged.

Stick it out. Maybe they are trying to get you more experience and train you for the role. Someone must of thought you were ready for a reason. Maybe go talk to them as well.
