I've been diagnosed with something bad and I am afraid to tell my manager. I've been in Tech a long time and have seen what they do in these situations. One, a heart problem on FMLA, laid off and then died. Others with cancer, same treatment. I don't want to tell my manager. I need my job! It's only me and I can't afford this alone. I need my health insurance. WTF do I do? They're going to fire me or lay me off. Jesus help me!!!

Definitely consult an employment lawyer before doing anything. And make sure to get everything documented and in writing ( via emails and text messages). ALWAYS leave a paper trail. Additionally you could utilize the resources of the disability network and find out how the company benefits can help support you thru this time. There are lots of resources for you and you don’t have to find them alone. Learning about your rights will make you feel a lot better.
Before you do anything, consult a lawyer to find out what they can and can’t do. Get that employee handbook out
Your manager doesn't need to know. It's a personal matter, and you are not obligated to tell him/her anything. You may think you owe that information, but you do not. Focus on yourself. Use your PTO for doctor appointments, and seek healing. Your manager will probably have no empathy. Don't seek it from him/her.
I’ve been at your shoes (at my previous job). For the time being, there is no need to notify anyone. Right now, try to focus on yourself and doing your job with less stress possible.
I know it seems impossible right now, but believe me, you will cross that bridge safely when you come to it.
Stay strong, wish you the best.
