Thread regarding Canon Inc. layoffs

SK Letter

This morning's memo from SK is effectively confirmation of everything we have been discussing. In corporate communications, an executive letter like this is called a "Pre-Announcement Framework."

When a CEO writes a long, weirdly emotional, metaphor-heavy letter (the fishing analogies, "caring family," "peace of mind") to the entire continent, it is designed to soften the blow for what is coming next.

Strip away the awkward language ("gently turn," "beautifully evolve") and look at the cold corporate math, this letter lays out the exact roadmap for the upcoming RIF. And it was painfully obvious.

@fm or and follow me here, Canon does promotions every year in January and July. No that can’t be it

Hey, fun fact: they also have a million+ to buy executive VIP boxes to every world cup match in the NY area.

@fe exactly. No career growth and no money for cost of living wages, but they have a million plus on a trip to Melville that feeds their ego. Do you have money to pay for transportation and meals up front to hope and pray you’re not fired before you get a chance to have expenses reimbursed?

@fe I have been promised a promotion multiple times since the beginning of the year, but then they keep pushing it back a few months each time. It’s completely ridiculous, yet I take the high road and continue to give 100% effort all the time. I get the impression that I’m not really wanted here, despite what my manager says. I must be on the cut list for next month, and they don’t want to be bothered updating my pay rate and job title in the system only for me to get deleted soon anyway. It’s the only logical explanation.

@dp it’s probably because the company never gives people raises that outpace the increase in monthly health insurance premiums, let alone inflation, and outside of upper management positions, there is zero hope of career growth in this company even for high performers.

@dn they're literally importing expats, and H1-Bs, and exporting jobs to the phillipines to harm the american workforce. Get your shinebox uncle tom, the master is calling from the big house and his shoes need cleaning

I think it’s a great idea to send everyone to see home office at least once in their career. It’s really shame that no matter what the company does people still have to complain about it

@bz you may want to think a little deeper about your request. If they let everyone work from home you should probably be worried more about losing your job

The only surprise takeaway was that Sammy likes to go fishing. Nice attempt to humanize yourself. Maybe in future editions he will reveal that he likes to play the guitar, fix up classic cars, volunteer at the local food bank, and then come up with some profound metaphor to running a company.

@ae why would they pay to fly them to Melville to 'cut' them? They can do that anytime on the phone.

Save money they say. Why not let us work from home? The cost of everything has gone up not just gas and I'm having a heck of a time just staying afloat. I'm spending more time in traffic due to construction zones everywhere and less time with my family. I get home and I'm frustrated instead of motivated.
Most of my time spent collaborating is on huddles or in meetings on google chat talking to people in other states. Whilst others are collaborating in office about their personal issues. Stop punishing us when a holiday falls on a Monday or whatever in office date. That's what it is...its punishment!! Do all divisions of Canon have to do this? Does CBPS or CFS have to follow these same rules?
I'm so stressed out and terrified of losing my job. There are so many things they CAN do to save money yet refuse to do. Stop making your employees so unhappy.

@ae If they were truly concerned about protecting our time as he states in the last paragraph they would cancel this Melville trip immediately. That’s the right thing to do.

They are sending the entire sales team in groups every week in July through August to Melville. Most will be cut. See the thread labeled still no survey results.
