Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

@tw So true. Every company has its sh---y bosses and then bosses that are amazing, and kind, empathetic and truly relish in seeing their teams and individual contributors grow.

Where it intersects with TGT is that you come in (upon joining) with this impression that the company is super progressive not only in its values (well, not so much anymore) but also that we care for one another. I remember my SO once swinging by my desk one day while I was on a ATM and seeing a sh-t-ton of heart emojis incessantly coming up during when the execs spoke, and they were like "what's up with that"? I explained it away as "we/they care", and a culture of belonging. Fast forward years later; I came to realize that it's all phony and performative when you are treating your TMs like sh-t, yet these L6s and L7s and above are still with the company. How is that possible? And good people are pushed out.

It's an unfortunate part about working in any organization. Some leaders are very good at attributing success to their team members and some just take it for themselves. Everyone's had a sh---y boss and a good boss. This is just life experience.

I am honestly surprised at how toxic of an environment my broader team is as well. I have been with the company for 10+ years, and 2018-2023 or 2024 was probably the sweet spot for team culture. It’s really individual leader dependent, and my particular leader (L7) will never provide relevant updates to me (L6) or ensure that work is being done throughout the team or initiatives communicated on. Teams outside of our organization will receive information that I have not and will ask me about it. This leader exists to fill calendar with meetings (not all attended) and thinks that they need to do nothing other than make decisions if required to during a meeting. The culture has become one of “do as little as possible and see who you can blame for any issues that arise”. Previously I would take the initiative to do some fairly impactful, large projects that were not necessarily in the scope of my role even. Now it is difficult to even be motivated to do even a little more than what is required to keep the business running. Not once have I received any recognition or acknowledgement that it was great that I solved XYZ problem. There are still people who do far less than I, but I have given up on being more effective than the bare minimum. It’s difficult to do more when you aren’t even equipped to. I can’t lead my boss and whole team and shouldn’t have to.

Some of the leaders in my area need to be talked to about how sh---y they can be to their people.
