Cigna invests $100 million in new AI-powered specialty pharmacy program

July 1 (Reuters) - Cigna (CI.N), opens new tab said on Wednesday its health services unit Evernorth has launched a new AI-powered specialty pharmacy program to reduce the time ‌it takes to process prescriptions and improve customer service.
The program, called Pharmacy Forward, is supported by a $100 million investment through 2028, the health insurer said.

Here are more details:
The company is launching the AI program first through its specialty pharmacy, Accredo.
The program uses AI to integrate clinical data and insights, generate summaries to free up more time for clinicians to focus on patient care.
'Pharmacy Forward' is expected to reduce clinician documentation time by up to 50%, the company said.
The program uses AI to improve prior authorization requests, halving the time it takes ‌for patients to receive their medication after Accredo receives a prescription, the company said.
Health insurers are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence tools to streamline documentation processes, reduce administrative burdens and lower costs.
Accredo is also expanding capacity, staffing, and capabilities at many of its nearly 40 care facilities, Cigna said.
The program is expected to generate about $400 million in value by the end of 2028, with Evernorth expecting to extend many of these capabilities to its other pharmacy operations in the coming years, it said.

UnitedHealth got hit with a substantial class action suit over something similar.

UnitedHealth Group and its subsidiary, naviHealth (now Home & Community Care), are facing a major nationwide class action lawsuit over their alleged use of an AI algorithm called "nH Predict" to wrongfully deny post-acute and rehabilitation care to elderly Medicare Advantage patients.
Specifics regarding the lawsuit’s scope, recent developments, and allegations include:
The Core Allegation: The lawsuit claims UnitedHealth used AI to prematurely cut off coverage for rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities, ignoring the clinical judgment of treating physicians in order to inflate profits. Plaintiffs allege the algorithm has up to a 90% error rate, as evidenced by Medicare’s reversal of these denials upon appeal.

United rebranded NaviHealth as Optum Home & Community Care.

These companies never learn.

You notice how vague the descriptions are.... no examples, testing, or concrete functional goals set. I think it's just a smoke screen with a lot of diversionary money. Be sure not to look behind the curtain Dorothy.

@a2 Although, not much consolation for those of us that already lost our jobs, if it does bring any sense of satisfaction, know this, AI is already causing two major obstacles for corporations.

1) AI Data Centers are already in just the beginning stages causing a major strain on the country’s electrical grid. And very few residents even want them in their backyard. I think the only “solution” (if could be called that) would be to create nuclear plants in every single state that can power the AI Data Centers. This would be an even worse idea.

2) Corporations are now seeing that the AI vendors just how costly AI is and just how fast the bills can rack up as users of AI that don’t really yet know how to harness it correctly, which as an aside is a reason for so many layoffs. AI vendors will just keep raising the prices for their products overtime. In the end, it will have been more cost effective for corporations to have kept their best employees that had many years of health insurance acumen built up. And even if AI “learns” how to do the roles of key personnel, AI still will never have the same decision making capabilities that come from a human. Simply cannot happen. Therefore, the members will be receiving worse product and services as a result of AI without these corporations in the end saving any monies. Right now, Corporate Executives are eating up the AI Vendors sales pitches. It is a mirage that as they get closer to it will keep getting farther away from their desired goals.

Not surprised Cigna is presenting AI as a productivity tool, not as a workforce reduction initiative. They specifically paired the AI announcement with news that they’re expanding staff and facilities at Accredo. AI will definitely continue to change staffing needs as the technology matures and it won’t be for our benefit as a large portion of us have lost our jobs after we taught AI how to do the work.
