I once told an acquaintance where I worked and I could swear that he forced himself not to smile, like he was about to laugh in my face. What am I, a court jester? How did we become such a laughing stock? What a mess this company is.

Maybe they thought were were working a kiosk getting that new team commision selling overpriced generic cell service. That is all most of the country knows of Verizon.
Yes Verizon is a good company with pay and Benefits. However their commitment to their customers and employees isn’t great. With offshore order managers and network engineers that make it hard to do business in the commercial space. Dec 30 many good people were laid off and given severance. Rumor has it that there is more to come in March. It is a good company if you can stay employed and your hard work means nothing.
I call BS on the OP or else he/she has some loser friends. I've never had any experience even remotely like that. The only qualm I have ever had about saying where I work is that people automatically think you're a genius with a phone.
Yes this is company is a clown show, but I will tell you first hand you would be hard pressed to get anyway near the salary and benefits that Verizon provides.
You might not feel it all the time, but I was able to stay in this company for 24 years by working hard , staying humble, and being grateful for the great pay and benefits i was getting here

I don’t believe that. I would never laugh or smile in a demeaning way at someones job. With the state of things I would be happy for them that they had a job. People who work for Verizon have varied opinions and experiences but what would an outsider know about Vz that would make them think working here is a joke? Say what you will about the place but you would be hard pressed to find equivalent pay and benefits at most other company’s. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of downvotes but just be honest with yourselves, it is not what it used to be but it could be a lot worse.
I don’t understand. Why are you embarrassed? And if you are just quit and work somewhere else. If you work for VZ Communications and are a union member you won’t find to many other jobs that pay what they pay and offer you the benefits that they do for the amount of work you actually do.

40+ yrs svc company (GTE/Verizon) has been very good to me. I have been blessed with great managers and coworkers. I am sure there are many others out there that feel the same.
Then leave. Folks that sit around complaining without action are doing nothing to right the trajectory of the company. Lots of folks spend more time here complaining than being productive. If you have so many better opportunities and Verizon is beneath you, why are you still here?!?!
Why, the juxtaposition between you and the acquaintance? Did the acquaintance do much better to be judgmental. Given, VZ, currently, has many issues, however, it is for now an existing profit-making enterprise. Will there a catalyst for a turnaround in the "near" future, lets hope, and will take more hope, what will be the catalyst, a new BODs??
