Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

It wasn't about being over 50

So for all those saying that if you are over 50, you are on the list. So not true. Myself and others are much over 50 and have been told that we're not affected. This layoff was much more about realignment than cutting dead weight or the older worker.

I don’t even know where this idea all the older folk are getting laid off. I’m guessing it just people are isolated and assume if a few older people get laid off it’s all the old folk. When I look on LinkedIn all I see are early to mid career sales folk and women from HR. It’s all about who you’re connected to.

Yes this was a realignment. A realignment to Asia and Central America to reduce overhead(salaries) will continue. This has been going on since Y2K for many tech vendors. First weed out the legacy staff that came from acquisitions over the years. They are older, naturally. A PC company doesn’t have the profit margins to afford the salaries I and others earned working at systems and software vendors over the last 30-40 years.

There used to be detailed technical training that you flew out and attended. Gone. Watch those mandatory training videos and that is all the formal training you can expect now.

It used to be safe from a career perspective as long as you were customer facing. They still need those people right? Nope. Covid took care of that and now the company sees the savings from no customer visits and we just sit on zoom calls with video turned off. No budget for business travel anymore. The career death spiral continues for those left behind.

Me? I quit/retired last March after getting my LTI/IBP payouts. My manager and a peer got whacked yesterday. Both over 60 and well paid. I had enough and am glad to have left on my terms. Good luck to those left behind.

It's a fact that many of those who earn the most, also happen to be on the "mature" side. So I think it feels like ageism, while in reality it's about cutting costs.

The worker is a debt and tax slave. Period. Thinking that any global corporation cares about about an employee's immediate welfare is naïve. It is always about profits and taking care of wall street bankers, institutional investors and the elites. In the end if the lawyers deem it sound or legal, the corporation will exploit it. And then there is good old public relations and optics. No corporations wants to send the wrong message to their audience. The show must go on.

over 50?? no it was about doing the last step of a dell purchase, layoff anyone who costs to much. that happens to be an older trendline.

navel gaze all you want, dell has moved on from me, they are stupid trash, Bane is ki-ling them with stupid. I have moved on since monday and updated my resume, have an interview on Thursday, another call on Friday, and a fresh copy in the hands of 5 headhunters.. I will have at least a contract very soon, but likely a job at a VAR.. Dell is not a great place to work, the hiring freezes, and the crazy fat proffit during covid has paid wallstreet, now we get shafted again, to shore up that profit margin... F these guys.
