Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Severance package

Hi, I was let go on Monday morning by a blind calendar invite with my managers manager and a hr lady. I am early 20s and was blindsided- I got let go because I was on a performance plan many months ago- I’ve been ki-ling it and yet still I was a small percentage of those let go in NGSA. The way Dell treated me after taking my first job right out of college has been terrible, especially when they didn’t even consult my manager on the layoff, they seem to have only told them right before they did it. Anyways I have never been more lost and hurt, guess I’ve got a lot of questions…

Is severance (2 months pay) negotiable? They told someone I know , “ it is controlled by an ERISA plan and we cannot vary from the plan”

Additionally asking for our laptops and computers sub 4 weeks sounds crazy to me, it is thousands of dollars of infrastructure and I’m a bit worried it may break and I would be liable, has anyone considered trying to make this process sooner?

Lastly does anyone have any advice on how to react to all the paperwork, I know Dell is a big company so I assume it is all protocol but I’m still not sure if they are trying to pull a fast one on us, after all this whole thing was nothing short of a fast one if you ask me…

Thanks I appreciate it!

Dell sacked staff with little experience to offset the real target which is experienced senior staff at high salaries to escape ageism lawsuits. Take the severance and don't look back. You don't want to build a career in that second rate sweat shop.

Thanks for all the feedback! I was on a coaching plan but I never made it to the PIP, there are many others still on coaching plans however. Felt like i was chosen out of hat. But in the end im grateful to learn this lesson young. i would never have expected to be blindly calendar invited first day of a quarter and then read a script with cameras off while i was in the office :/ bit worried that because my first job out of college was only about 7 months it'll not make me not as marketable..but i appreciate all the kind words. Also just want to point out that the same day they let 5 go for WFR they hired 15 for the same role…really woke me up to what corporate jobs are like…guess i believed that dell and the NGSA program was not like that, but learned im just a number

Do you have any reason that you have to litigate something with Dell? If not sign it. If so, ask to speak to legal, but bring an attorney. Yes they can on very one off instances, offer more than the standard package. However they would do it as a completely separate agreement from the base separation agreement.

And yes I speak from personal experience.

PIP is same as death row so dont even bother trying it never works out. Its good experience to get that first layoff done when young not much responsibility kids house other financial obligations. use it as learning experience sign get your check move on to something better Dell is a sinking ship. Now that you are awakened keep in mind its just a job in future exploits. All transactional you are just a cog anywhere that can and will be replaced when they find a cheaper way. you work a job you hate to make money to do the things you love. stash as much cash away before 50 since at that age you enter the death zone in the corporate world unless you are an executive type.

Sign it and don’t look back. I doubt PIP had anything to do with it. Dell wants shed boatload ppl 50+ so they look for 20-30 yr olds to cut for balance so doesn’t look as obvious. Study your sev docs when get them and see what mean.

PIPs went out "a few months ago" because they knew layoffs were coming. Including your manager was away. Putting you on that PIP was signing you up to be the one laid off, back then.

I left after a PIP, sounds like you rode it out, so take the severance pay, sign whatever, then do what you want.

wait til you get the separation package that you have to sign to get your severance. You will be signing away all your rights to say anything about Dell. It is multiple pages, you need to sign and date each page and initial many line items. Designed to protect Dell, but you need to sign to get anything. Good luck

I am in the same boat but much older. I am sorry for your situation but I know you will be ok. My advice follow all instructions and do not offload any Dell information. When you send the laptop back get a physical receipt. I returned an old one a few years ago and Franklin didn’t have a record but I bags the FedEx information.
