Our prod support engineers had to script, know SQL and be pretty fluent with Splunk queries. Never saw them write code or commit code. If you enjoy managing fires, go for it.

Don't do it (take a job in prod support) unless you enjoy getting $hit on, on a daily basis.
They just have to pick up all the pieces once Agile team has thrown more cr*p code over the fence, a losing battle.
The need to code to depends on role and privileged access to production systems. If you are supporting production, separation of duties will not allow you to submit code. That said, there are roles for Production Support Engineers where coding is the main job. These engineers write for our automation systems and there will be a need for more of them going forward. They work on engineering teams primarily and don't usually have routine access to production systems but do write scripts/code that run in production. Every engineer needs to be able to read and understand what the script is doing.

they may have to run scripts the developers give them and they should know what the code is doing so they can troubleshoot. They shouldnt be coding themselves, no.
