Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Exxonmobil black bean day.

On March 25th 1843 a group of Texans who had escaped were captured. They all had to draw from a bowl of beans where every 10th bean was black. Those who drew the black bean was shot. Exxonmobil could save lots of money if we quit this farce we call performance assessment. Just put out a large bowl of beans where every 5th bean is black. We all line up and draw a bean. White beans stay and black beans go out the gate. It will achieve the same results and save time and money. Instead of EADS we could call it Black Bean Day.

@6nug is your "really huge brown bean" the real stanky kind that clears the entire room? Or is it the other kind that goes up and down when you get really excited?!

"Black bean day" is a brilliant way to get rid of some of the unqualified ones that were hired simply to meet quotas.

I agree. It is a time consuming, id--tic process. We spend hours going through the steps in a sick game. We write our PDS to try to convince others of our worth. At the same time we ask others (KO) to help verify our worth. We then meet with our supervisor so they can tell us what to change in order to fare better in the ranking pit. Later, we meet again to discuss where we ended up after the super secret ranking sessions end.

Turning a giant carnival wheel, passing out fortune cookies, drawing straws, or picking beans out of a pot would make just as much sense (and take far less time).

Drawing straws….same analogy. It’s always been what the assessment process feels like. Been everywhere in the rank group. My smarts, hard work, and performance didn’t change….just the people ranking me.

To be honest on my own weaknesses (we all have them), I’m not good at selling my own successes or playing the political game. I expect my work to speak for itself…more than I speak for it. It’s a losing hand if I find myself with an out-of-touch manager….which was mostly early in my career, when I also was quite naive as well. I worry for folks who fit the same bill.

Only if you also took 1/5 of the beans, painted them in shiny paint, called them great - regardless of their actual output - and basically excluded them from the process.
