Swimming against the tide in an unhealthy toxic work place at Verizon

This story reminds me of my last 10 years at Verizon.

Constantly swimming against the tide in an unhealthy toxic work place at Verizon without getting caught in a RIFtide was a mental grind that became worse as time marched on. Same here as in this story: "I was doing what I had always done: doubling down, working harder, stressing more, and trying to control a situation that was out of my hands." Eventually it became a game of survival while preparing for that day. Fortunately that day came in the form of a buyout in 2019, otherwise it would have broke me mentally too.

I left 4 years ago after a lengthy career at Verizon. Best decision I ever made. Work at Verizon was beyond toxic as others have said. There were so many miserable people all fighting with each other, all trying to hang on, all afraid to leave the comforts of the known, as so many had been there too long like myself. I now make 20% more than I would make today has I stayed, and I honestly like my job, my company and my co-workers. If you want to get out and are hesitant, don’t be. Just get out. It is SO much better with that cr-p show in the rear view mirror.

All it takes is to need it ONE time, but not be eligible, and you can lose a job you love. That’s my point.

And you won’t always know when you need it. Imagine saying the same about insurance. “How often do you plan on getting sick?”

Stupid ableist stance. Europeans don’t have such problems. This is uniquely a US problem.

@5yum+1llSrFuo waiting for health insurance is not thing anymore. Even Verizon gives insurance day 1. I also had no probation period at Verizon or other companies I worked at. FMLA? Unless you are planning on an accidental why would you not switch jobs over such a minor thing? Do you use FMLA much? Parental leave again is day 1 at many places.

Except you get penalized each time you move jobs:

  • Probationary period
  • Waiting for health insurance eligibility
  • Waiting for FMLA eligibility

Most people realize, too late, that they switched jobs because they got “itchy” and needed a month onboarding / offline. Not to leave the company forever.

If you TRULY got a raw deal on your offer and are legitimately underpaid, don’t fret, Verizon has a policy of rehiring at exactly the same salary at which you left.

Quit crying. Go get another job if you don’t like working at Verizon. People act they are stuck. I will say this. Most people that leave Verizon want to come back. You and I both know it.

The best way to predict the future is to create it. Take action before you have to and voluntary leave the toxic culture and never ending dumpster fire that is Verizon!
