Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

Business internet?

I just started at United Healthcare (work from home role) and my trainer mentioned "business internet" and that a technician will be coming to my house to install this "business internet." She couldn't really explain it. I wasn't told anything about this in my interviews and this seems weird. Does anyone have additional info about on this? Is the tech going to need access to my attic to pull wires down to the work laptop? What exactly is this tech going to do?

Hi, former BSL from UHC here. The form you have to fill out is just what your bsl uses to fill out another form that initiates whomever the preferred internet provider is in your location to come out and do the install. Totally normal.
My former CEO lived in a different state from my group and opted out of using company paid internet because he was paranoid. We read the "telecommuter agreement" and nowhere in the legalese could we determine that using company paid internet was mandatory. I got a help desk/telecommuter support tech to admit they push you to get it, because if you have internet trouble and don't use it, they can't support you.
I also don't think our leaders ever saw a bill for our telecommuters and certainly didn't see other devices you were using with it. But IT being able to is another story.
They really don't have good tutorials for remote workers on how to connect. . Unless someone in your group created their own.
I ran off a personal hotspot my last 2 years. It's totally doable.

To the person that is concerned that the company can see other devices, they can't. They basically just pay the local ISP for internet service. All they can see is what comes on the bill, data usage and stuff. I have used company internet for year with no issues.

It is just your local internet company coming to install your internet. I believe you can also have UHG just take over your personal internet if you would like. I work at home and I only have the company paid internet, everything runs through it including personal stuff. Has been this way for 8 years with no issues or concerns.

If the Internet that you currently have at your house is the same as the Internet that they are installing, it will run through the same ports that you already have in the house. When you connect your computer, you’ll just have to connect to the Uhc VPN.

From what I understood in our meet and greet meeting thing on February 24, we have to fill out a request form sometime during the first week of training (the week of March 6). Once the request forms are submitted by UHC, they will send a technician to our homes to install a dedicated internet line solely for our work equipment. I'm trying to figure out how to connect my laptop to my personal internet via a wired ethernet connection (we're not allowed to use wifi) but all it's doing is giving me a huge headache. Ugh.

Yes, they offer free internet since a lot of us WFH. If they didn’t, they would have to give us some kind of comp for wifi. With that, you can deny it. I use my personal wifi. I don’t like knowing they can potentially see devices on the network, so I opted out.
