H1B Laid off workers

For the last few months, every time I open up my linkedin page there is always a sad story of some H1B worker who got laid off with a nice family picture begging people to find them a job so that they can stay in the U.S. First of all, I do sympathize for these folks and if I was in their situation of course I would do everything in my power to do what best for me.

However, let's backtrack and remember why you came to this country in the first place. You were sponsored to come here to WORK because of your skillsets and that's it. We didn't bring you here so that you can bring your family over and take advantage of this loophole to try and stay here permanently. Once the company decides that your WORK is no longer needed, its expected that you would return to your country. This is NOT inhumane, it is expected of your assignment. Again remember you chose to come here to WORK.

Thousands of workers that are U.S citizen are being laid off. A lot of these guys are the sole provider in their family and rely on their income to support their family. Who sympathize for them? I would rather that companies try to keep these workers than trying their best to help the H1B workers. Now if you follow through the residency process to come here legally without relying on H1B loophole then that's different and I totally support that.

That's another rich post. I bet OP eagerly tells anybody who wants to hear it that he's "half Irish, half Greek, and twenty percent Italian". If I had a penny each time an American said that, I'd have Musk serve me breakfast every morning.

Before folks in the forum loose sight, remember where your families came from. No one is using any loophole, every immigrant comes here with dreams of opportunities and works crazy hard : just like each of your own families and ancestors. Compassion will bring us all together. There is enough work to go around.

"why can't they go back to their home countries? most of these h1bs have been at cisco for 15+ yrs and yet did not get a green card"

Not true, HIB can't be extended more than 6 years. After that you will need a green card application to stay in the US and work... Cisco will sponsor the green card and pay all related fees if they want you to stay. If the application is rejected you have to go, nothing Cisco can do about it.

why can't they go back to their home countries? most of these h1bs have been at cisco for 15+ yrs and yet did not get a green card, so that means most of them are in their mid to late 40s. age discrimination knows not your legal status. btw some of these h1bs are way too expensive - grade 11 or 12. cisco can get cheaper American citizens for half that price who are 15-20 yrs younger.

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

  • imagine John Lennon

Desperate times but don't lose your class, at least you could suggest a solution such as extending the stay, tech-funded relocation etc.
