Vulnerability we-ponized

So it looks like after the great resignation of 2022 and the great demoralization of 2023, leaders have been called upon to exercise more "vulnerability", to soften their tone, to be more understanding for the regular employee and to conduct themselves in a more casual demeanor.

How pathetic is to see supervisors pretending they care. It is so inauthentic and staged that it's even comical.

But please don't be fooled. You supervisor is not your friend or mentor, and the moment you reciprocate his/her fake vulnerability by opening up and speaking honestly, he/she will use your words against you during the performance review to destroy your career.

I'm so sorry you are going thru this. Let me tell you a BS story so I can show you I have feelings too.

Yep I've seen this. Female supervisor acts like BFF and then come review day turns faster than Sybils 16 personalities.

We have the same situation at BRCP. Having her as a supervisor is extremely painful.

Yes. On several occasions my supervisor walked by me for 6 days straight without acknowledgment while I sat outside their office. Then started using the phrase “because Care is a core value…” yet couldn’t care to acknowledge the presence of their team.

Fake empathy at its best. I know a supervisor in Clinton that was loaded with it. Not sure how she's still around when everyone on her team bailed because if her poor leadership.

OP is spot on. And this vulnerability trap, is more predominant in female supervisors.

Diversity w3aponized.

If I hear another manager harp on “having fun” at work being a core goal I am going to throw up.

I dislike this place as much as any of you, but you have to be a d-mba$$ to think that when you joined this company you were becoming part of a family. Maybe things are different if you're in a small location (like Paulsboro, Cicero, Clinton, etc.), but for the big sites come to your senses. This is a business transaction and extraction agreement. You give them your time, you take their money. Your goal should be to as efficient as possible - most money extracted from their coffers for the least amount of effort put in. However you want to sleep at night to make that happen is up to you. If you want to go somewhere else where the efficiency equation is higher...or you gasp like what you're doing more, do it. Don't shuffle your feet either.

It’s pathetic to watch my manager with her fake cr-p and cut throat back stabbing ways.

Your supervisor is definitely not your friend. Mine threw me under the bus as soon as he find out I was his competitor in the ranking. He and his cohorts also made sure anyone who speak against his ideas were reassigned or PIP.

Never trust anyone here. Too many back channel maneuvers.

OP speaks the truth. Your manager is looking for data regarding your health, family, behaviors, relationships and anything else HR can chew on to assess how much of a liability you may be now or in the future. Since their pool of useful id--ts who are false friends for this purpose is dwindling, they are adding this to their disingenuous repertoire.

People are referred to as resources… not individuals, not staff,… but nameless resource.

The demoralization starts when you become an employee and you have to be thick skin to stay here. Or you become one of the abusers. It’s not a good place to work from a mental health perspective. Overtime, your sense of right and wrong will become twisted.

It remind me a Chicken Sh!t phrase from a manager at Permian three years ago. "You are a good asset for the company". Remember the ones who put the quantity to be fire are the EM board, but the one who select to fire people are the managers.
