Thread regarding VMware layoffs

for the snr director who asked below

All designations go minus 1 at least or minus 2 in some cases. Specially for people managers. salary will not reduce as per the deal agreement. A VP will become a very highly paid Director for the market and a Director may become a very highly paid manager at BC. That’s for the job market. Good luck finding a job later explaining how you were a VP/ director earlier.

Broadcom layoff parachute is fantastic for VPs only when BC lays off its VPs. Read BC’s sec filings. Full 1 year salary, bonus and all RSUs is true. This is industry average too. But then the same is true for VMware VPs too. And that’s why VPs are protected even if they become non-VPs. Their executive severance agreements are so well defined that it will be treated as continuing benefits for 1 year post closure.

Apart from legal minimum, severance is not defined or protected for anyone below VP nor it is a benefit. Feel bad for the directors and snr directors who will be treated as ICs during separation. The snr director guy below is rightly showing the picture. Any director/ snr dir in his/her sane mind will be and should be hunting in the job market.

There is zero upside to working for Broadcom, just pain and agony await.

This is what I got from some where Broadcom engineer levels. So, after acquisition, lots of engineers will get principal title, it's actually better than in VMware. Broadcom's principal is much lower than director.

  1. Engineer
  2. Staff I
  3. Staff II
  4. Senior Staff
  5. Principal
  6. Senior Principal
  7. Associate Technical Director
  8. Technical Director
  9. Senior Technical Director
  10. VP, Engineering

I expect the transition of titles to be one of the first big shocks that we are not in Kansas any more but in a bloodsucking PE style firm. Second shock will when they take my bone marrow for experimentation.

Is it done at Day1 when BC extends offer? Or later after merge?

VMware was passing out director promotions like halloween candies. People being rapidly promoted crowned director with no people management experience. And worse yet the VPs which should not be as they have no operational experience in the role. Absolute train wreck at VMware.

level mapping

You get what you get and you don’t get upset… or you do, and simply leave.

Get used to the phrase - “speak to the hand”

Soon you will learn the Hock Tan way youngling…

Quite similar to when other companies were acquired by VMware, unfortunately.

Their roles were reduced a step (but HR was very adamant we don't say "demoted"). However, it also varies per acquisition. Two acquirees working on a project, but the more senior person has a lower P level than the junior, just because of how they were acquired. I can't wait for more of that drama in Broadcom

Are there many Directors and above in BC, VMware is riddled with them.

For ICs, there should be level mapping between the two companies, right? Can someone tell how the mapping is done?

@1szs+1mNAKdvD That is a quite different and not at all linear with one caveat. IF someone has a distinguished engineer title, they better be chairing IETF working groups, be named on a stack of patents and/or the creator of a core product. Otherwise it'll be viewed as title inflation.

So get acquired by Broadcom and get a demotion?

By definition, working at Broadcom is a demotion no matter what title you give yourself, even if you are promoted.

Working at Broadcom shows you just work for money and are part of the flock of obedient sheep.

This apply to everyone, even ICs?

So Principal Eng go down to Staff, Staff go down to Snr and Snr Eng go down to just Eng (or they drop a level if there are multiple levels of Principal, Staff, Snr)?

So get acquired by Broadcom and get a demotion?

The SD I reported to is an IC in skillset, maturity, and experience. So good - demote away.

The VP I reported up to is a C player at best, better suited to a govt job. He's managed to feather his nest nicely, but I cannot imagine that all the VPs in my group who had that title will retain that title going forward.

Delicious schadenfreude.
