AT&T has operating expenses that far exceed what its competitors have to shell out every month. It'll be interesting to see how much longer AT&T can sustain itself based on its overhead alone not to mention its capital expenditures!

Yeah, and looking at the target areas for Gigapower there is some overlap with areas now that are currently served by Google Fiber in AZ. Not at AT&T anymore, but several of my co-workers have told me they can get Google Fiber now(some are in areas like UT OOR), but some are in Austin.
Makes me wonder if Gigapower won't eventually be an acquisition target for Google.
Perhaps Amazon would make a run on acquiring AT&T. It would get the wireless and fiber on the cheap.
So the articles I read had statements from Verizon and T-Mo stating that they were not in talks.

There has been speculation that the endgame of these consolidations / headcount cuts was to make AT&T attractive to a buyer. What if that buyer is Amazon? hmmm....

We cannot afford to compete because of the dividend and the debt service takes too much of the free cash flow executives know it but never talk about it just layoff people instead.
As an added bonus if you're talking on the phone to your spouse and they comment that you're getting low on laundry soap, Alexa will chime in that she just ordered it for you.
I read the deal is likely with Dish. AT&T signed an agreement with DISH last year. Maybe T just gets in the wholesale business. Need a lot less employees that way. Ensures govt bailout.

To be sure this is a treat, but Amazon has demonstrated problems in being able to turn a profit on phones and streaming. Eight years ago Amazon introduced the Fire Phone; within a year, it was discontinued. In streaming, Amazon Prime has had trouble attracting subscribers partly because the offer was too complex, a very AT&T thing to do. (Prime? Prime Video? Amazon streaming?).
Nonetheless, it's still Amazon and they can and do displace entire sectors when they get it right.
Gven the current management, don't expect a cohesive counterpunch from 208 S. Ackard, even with a newly spry and nimble workforce coming into the tower to sit side-by-side ready to collaborate like you're never, ever seen (lol).
Good for consumers, bad for the MNOs. Need to know the details, but this would be a game-changer, for sure.
Amazon should just buy AT&T… at least there would be true strategic leadership.
