Most of them focus ONLY on doing their job.
These people might get along well with peers and even their managers as well, but they are not capable of pleasing two levels up.
Remember, when your manager's manager nominated you for layoff, most likely your manager doesn't dare to fight for you.
This observation doesn't cover those fighting with their direct managers, even these managers could be id--ts or a--holes.

"Unless you are hugely successful and highly visible, others will not argue your boss’s decision." means the same as "capable of pleasing two levels up."
Most likely your boss offered you up for layoff. Unless you are hugely successful and highly visible, others will not argue your boss’s decision.
Maybe they need to sacrifice one scapegoat to save the incompetent people?
Pay attention to who they picked for layoff in the past. Is there any suspicion they like to pick on people with certain profiles ( race, ,gender etc)?
If unfortunately you fit that profile, your odds of being picked for layoff is much higher.
If your manager thinks that you can do their job.... you get fired.
Especially if their manager thinks you can do your manager's job.
Tough times.
Bottom line:
- If you don't do what your manager asks, you'll get fired.
- If you ONLY do what your manager asks, you'll probably get fired.
Know what I mean?
