I'm not sure how much tech support you're able to get at your location, but especially if you have an older computer you'll want to see if you can get a newer replacement. Without being able to troubleshoot I can't offer much help though.

My cursor has been freezing and dragging itself across the screen (ever since I got a replacement laptop). A Previous poster said it means they are monitoring your screen when that happens. More recently, my screen will suddenly flash black for a few seconds. I keep thinking they’re shutting off my access and about to lay me off

OMG - a monitor itself does not freeze up. Let us show some computer saavy here. If anything freeze or goes slow, it is the COMPUTER ITSELF. I have spent 20 plus years in this industry and this is about the best d-mb comment in history.
