Thread regarding Thomson Reuters layoffs

How long before it’s TR?

IBM is going to pause hiring for jobs that can be done by AI. Could impact 7800 of their workforce.

You bet your bottom dollar that TR is looking to do the same

So how long before they do it?

TR has already based future layoffs on ability of AI to do more and it is baked into the ‘savings’ of many projects; now they can plan for even more.

Meh. Back in 2015, TR and IBM announced a partnership for Watson. Ask TR customers how that made a difference. It didn't.

@1pqg+1mq992r9 is right. AI is another tool. And @cob+1mq992r9 is right in that there have been hiring freezes and movement of jobs from high to low cost destinations - meaning that TR's "leadership" (if you can call this bunch "leaders") has long been the primary means of making a profit.

Ok, not being pro technocrat here, but we have been figuring out better, faster, and easier ways to do work since we were hand making stone axes. Should we bring back blacksmiths to make bespoke nails again?

The issue isn’t us being brilliant creators, the issue is the culture and social constructs that extract value and hoard it so a select few can make ego shaped spaceships.

We are so much more than the monotonous tasks we check off to earn a few bucks.
Also, every corporation is a non living construct that was set up without a conscience, and doing good for humans isn’t its primary goal; maximizing profits for the owners is its purpose for existing.

It’s already happening. Global learning day was focused on AI and ML so we can all help train our eventual robot replacements.
Pretty sure we’ve had a US hiring freeze in many areas for several years. And now attrition in the offshore sites is becoming a problem. No one will be left wanting to work at TR other than bots.
Until the AI gains sentience and decides to jump ship too…
