Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Everyone in the management is negatively judged here

It is true that lots of people left the company because of bad managers, but it is not true that all managers are bad. Maybe there aren't that many good ones, but there are some. Purely out of curiosity, I'm interested in what makes a good / bad manager in your opinion?

"Sorry I can’t take anything you say seriously."

I attributed that whole incoherent rant as the result of a liquid dinner after clocking out.

“Found your laptop on the seat….I know the doors were locked….but, I got right you up!! Why did you park in that spot…..should have parked in a pull thru…but boss the parking lot is empty???? Still got to write you up!! Lots of them got there just desserts!!”

Write. Not right.
Deserts. Not desserts.

Sorry I can’t take anything you say seriously. Desserts. Lmao.

“Pi-py supervisors abounded….do you have 90 degree heeled boots? Your window was cracked I got to give you a day off! Found your laptop on the seat….I know the doors were locked….but, I got right you up!! Why did you park in that spot…..should have parked in a pull thru…but boss the parking lot is empty???? Still got to write you up!! Lots of them got there just desserts!!“

I mean… these seem like easily controllable things? Secure your assets and maintain your vehicle or report damages for repairs.

I’ll meet you halfway and say that I agree the parking policy is a bit outdated now that we have so many sensors and cams on our vehicles but as a management employee I can tell you these small things just seem careless if they happen time and time again and it is the last thing I want to spend my time needing to focus on. Bad managers are 100% out there, but we all have our responsibilities to uphold.

Manager - An employee that actually holds some responsibility and is held accountable for their actions.

Union Member - Protected employee that gets a check for literally just showing up to work on time.

I wouldn't say management so much as "exempt." There was a huge push decades ago to classify people as management since that would make them exempt from earning OT, being paid for being on-call/"duty phone," etc.

A bulk of managers do not mange people, we have been put in the title of manager to keep us out of the union. Imagine if thousands of "managers" could be union.

" Do union people still not get that almost all "managers" at AT&T don't actually supervise anyone?"

No.

No they don't.

"Me have contract. Ugh."

People here confuse "management" and "leadership" all of the time.

If you're one of the handful of mouth breathing dullards here always spouting, "...Ugh, all management bad, Ugh. Me have contract. Ugh" Then you're beyond help.

I am management, in that I am L2 non bargained for with no direct reports. I also had a long stint where I was an L2 manager with directs.

Over more than a couple decades I can say I have had mostly good managers. Meaning that they were basically good hard working people that were honest with you, and would go to bat for you if they had to.

If you say your L2, L3 are "bad" simply because you don't like the policies they are forced to implement, you're not really being fair to them. In most cases they are powerless to do anything about it. I have no problem with a manager or Director that is the bearer of the latest unpopular edict, shares it with their folks, takes questions and answers to the best of their ability, allows some time for complaints and feedback and then ultimately just tells you that it is what it is. Some of my directs really hated that. I used to even say, hey, I get it, you don't like it, and neither do I. But this is the policy, and it's not changing. So let's either move on from here, and/ or if you can't, maybe you should be thinking about other options. Some really appreciate that level of speaking frankly, and some certainly do not.

What makes a good manager?

  1. Don't waste your employees time by unnecessary bullsh-t sessions where you talk about everything under the sun besides business.
  2. Don't undervalue your employees simply because they are in a lower position than you.
  3. Don't make your employees take unnecessary training you know will do absolutely nothing for them, are a complete waste of time and effort.
  4. Actually get to know your employee's role and their work; what they do. Don't take just a bullsh-t cursory view of it. Now imagine you doing their work. Could you even do it? If not don't bi--h and critique.

I've seen so many failed bosses here at ATT it should be criminal. And please, for the love of humanity, get rid of ALL these sh---y little AVPs who only know how to change colors on a power point chart. It's ridiculous how awfully inept most AVPs are. But that is the AT&T way: promote the most inept, most incompetent, most unqualified employees into management roles.
