Thread regarding Ford layoffs

LL6 asked me to wfh for next 2 weeks

My LL6 emailed, asking me to wfh for the next two weeks. I had been going to office couple times a week. Does this imply that I am about to be chopped?

Check with your other co-workers. If manager asked the same, it might due to many people taking vacations and due to shutdown. If you are the only one who got asked, then yes you are in the danger zone. Good luck!

It's probably safer to WFH for the next couple of weeks, until this round of layoffs are done. People are angry and crazy...you never know which 1 (or 2) could lose it and hurt others. Stay safe!

Regard the push for RTO, there’s a definite economic advantage for a company to have its information workers work remotely, it the management can figure out how to manage remote workers. The expense of office buildings is eliminated. People have been working remotely for decades now. It can be done, and done well.

Most likely the same message went to your whole department. That way when some are laid off, they won't need security to escort them from the building. If I am going to be laid off, I'd rather do it remotely rather than in the office.

Everyone will be asked to WFH on Monday until further notice. Then the layoffs will begin.

Once the first settles in a couple of weeks, and the anger from the survivors settles down, fill RTO will follow.

Ford doesn't care about you. You are a cost center to them.

In my area, there had been a lot of talk about going to the GM model of primarily working remotely and not having assigned desks way before COVID. Our physical presence would only be required to do lab or vehicle work or other special occasions. They didn’t see the need to spend money on a building, utilities and maintenance staff just to have us sit in our cubicles and attend WebEx meetings.
The pressure to return to the office must be political. Commercial real estate and their lenders are hurting.

Your LL6 didnt say why?

Our building is undergoing some renovation so we have been told to plan to WFH.

Are people you normally work with going on vacation? Maybe there is no short term reason to come into the office.

Layoffs don't take two weeks. You wouldn't be asked to stay out of the office for two weeks to keep you away from the carnage.

Isn’t it ironic that they want us to RTO, but then tell us not to RTO?

Unknown. It likely means they don’t want people spending the entire day talking at the water cooler about layoff activities.

Noticing today that a number of the contractors on our IT team must of been let go on Friday. I did a draft reply all email to the team and saw who was impacted. Same pattern as always with our areas layoffs the unproductive sycophant contractors unaffected, some good ones cut and one rotten one cut.
