Ascension nurses walk out...

Hundreds of nurses at Austin’s Ascension Seton Medical Center walked out of the hospital Tuesday morning, kicking off the largest nurses strike in Texas history.

The strike began at 6:45 a.m., with nurses marching along West 38th Street in front of the hospital, holding signs with messages like “Safe staffing saves lives!” and “Essential? Yeah right!”

Seventy-two percent of the 900-person nursing staff voted to form a union last fall. National Nurses United began its first contract negotiations with Ascension in November. Now, the union says it has reached an impasse with hospital management over priorities related to hiring and retention.

A top concern for the union is lower guaranteed nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. Nurses at the hospital say they are assigned too many patients at a time, causing nurses to burn out and patients to receive a lower standard of care.

Ascension is a Catholic, not-for-profit health care system and one of the largest in the country, with roughly 139,000 employees and hospitals in about 19 states. It had more than $1.7 billion in cash on hand at the end of its last financial year, which ended June 30, 2022. In December, a New York Times investigation into Ascension found the staffing shortages at its hospitals were caused by years of cutting staff in order to increase profits.

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - For the second time in a week, employees at a big company in Wichita are on strike.

Nurses at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph and St. Francis are on a one-day strike outside their respective hospitals. The strike started at 7 a.m. Tuesday, and nurses will take a three-hour break in the afternoon to stay out of the heat.

Contract talks between the hospital and National Nurses United started in February, and a deal still has not been reached. Nurses say they're protesting Ascension's refusal to address staffing shortages at its hospitals.
