Crime seems high near the city, but commuting from the suburbs is an hour + thanks to traffic

There are some areas trying to secede from city of Atlanta proper, but I think those are expensive neighborhoods.
Utter craziness for any Finance Billing OPS employees who were required to relocate by early 2021 to work in Birmingham/Hoover, AL
Now these employees are required to relocate/work in a Hub City to attempt to keep a job that is not guaranteed.
Atlanta is a cesspool. You are nuts if you are even thinking about moving there!
Those houses are a bit too close together for me. I don't care too much for a subdivision with houses that are so close to the street with those short driveways. Looks a bit congested when people leave their cars in the driveway, really takes away from the overall look.
I live in Marietta now, looking to move to N. GA - checking out Great Sky now - thanks for the suggestion.
Canton, GA is the place to be because it's 10 min north of the end of the 575 Express Lane. Single lane until you get to 75, then 2 lanes that take you all the way inside 285. From there it's 10 min to exit and building 10 min from there if you have to work in Midtown. Better yet, if you work in Alpharetta, you can take back roads past horse farms. Both are long commutes but at least low stress. Canton is the safest city I've ever lived in and they are building a new high school. It's growing fast but much more affordable than Alpharetta area and GA-400 and that area is way too crowded. Great sky is a nice peaceful wooded subdivision on a reservoir. It has the Etowah River, a great downtown, and more parks than I've seen everywhere and they are building more. There is nothing about it I don't love.
Being north of Atlanta lets you drive to the NC and GA mountains in an hour on weekends with national forests, etc. 90 min to Chattanooga too. Anything south of Atlanta is cheaper but higher crime and everything south of there looks like Florida until you get to Tampa. If I was starting life over I would do it here. Someday there will be a second tech corridor as jobs come to Marietta, Kennesaw, Woodstock and Canton and the commutes get shorter.
I appreciate the concern from those worried about me making a rash decision.
I’m not. We rent right now (and plan to in GA if possible.)
I don’t have any children and my wife has an e-commerce business that can be relocated easily, since it’s all online.
We do plan to start a family at some point, but thankfully that isn’t something that I have to consider with this.
My heart goes out to those that do have young children and / or spouses that can’t easily relocate. I hate all this.
I also haven’t even made my mind up yet
there are houses apartments and condos to live in, in Atlanta
North Fulton is nice but pricey. Cobb & Cherokee counties are getting way expensive too. The entire “metro” is growing (too much), and inflation impact is ubiquitous.
before you make any drastic moves and uproot your family. do some reseasearch on atlanta schools, crime, demographics, etc. and ask yourself is this where i want to raise my family.
Sounds like this is exactly what the OP is doing.
Seconding Dunwoody, if you can afford it - I live there and report to Alpharetta but if they tell us to go to Lenox instead I'm indifferent. Also a good location for proximity to jobs in general, if you end up not staying with the company or if you have a spouse who will also be looking for work.
If you wanted to be very strategic, you would look at Roswell and/or Dunwoody. There are currently 3 designations for Atlanta - Alpharetta, Lenox, and Midtown - all of those are about a 30 min commute time on a typical traffic day. That said, the 285/400 interchange is currently FUBARd due to construction so nothing typical about the commute to Lenox or Midtown from that area right now.
Don't move to Atlanta unless you have no ties to where you currently live. If no ties, Atlanta has fantastic economy so there's jobs available for when T fires you -- which at this point believe they will 'right size workforce' down to handful of upper management -- however it is VERY expensive to live anywhere close to Alpharetta or midtown Atlanta. Expect at least hour commute one-way to either, perhaps longer.
The company wants you to move on your own dime but will be laying off anyway and no guarantee of employment. Sounds like a deal only an id--t would take
As a long time Atlanta resident I agree with the majority of posts here but one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the areas north of Alpharetta continue to see rapid growth. So, if you move here and live in the Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Forsyth Co., etc. area you should expect traffic to be much worse 5 years from now. Nice places to live if you like the suburbs but lots of development comes with the territory.
Express toll lanes in Northwest Atlanta make a big difference. Depending on whether you’re gonna be at Midtown or Lenox, you can also do Xpress buses that go straight from the stop to the Marta Station. Obviously, Atlanta is not what was pre-Covid/BLM riots so this may not appeal to you
hot lanta and twerking, what more could you ask for?
move for ATT and ...well, there is no help for you...
Adamsville for the win.
OP, are you asking us or telling us?
Crime seems high....
Isn't that true of any major city? If you are considering moving here I suggest you watch the local news. You will get a feel for the number of shootings that occur EVERY DAY. These are the same folks driving on the highway, standing in line with you at the store, pumping gas at the pump next to you. The same people driving 90+mph on 75 / 85 /285. The same people blocking intersections to do burn outs. The same people driving their challenger / chargers weaving in / out of traffic on local streets. The same people displaying their we-pons in local stores. I could go on and on. To get away from a lot of this you have to be North of Alpharetta. Anywhere from Alpharetta and north it will be a brutal commut to Lenox or Peachtree. The same is on 75 and 575, brutal commutes from areas that most will say are safer than points south of these locations

There are other places inside the perimeter like Paces Ferry and Buckhead area but that is C-suite money to live there
Don’t relocate for T. You will pay a lot to move only to get laid off. The company is counting on folks leaving.
Like all other dim crime ridden cities in the US, outside perimeter 285 north is best area, expensive and an awful commute to the city.
I like that College area around the campuses.
Downtown Atlanta is great. Nice parks and schools. It is also very close to the airport with not much noise.
Lived in Alpharetta for 8 years before I left GA. If the “Atlanta” office is in Alpharetta, I’d recommend Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton, or Johns Creek for a short commute. If the office is inside I-285, get used to a long commute.
You could replace "Atlanta" with any major city, and even some minor ones in each state. It's always a trade-off of longer commutes for less crime.
Roswell area is in Fulton County and is one of the best places to live in Georgia. Living in Roswell offers residents a dense suburban feel and most residents own their homes. In Roswell there are a lot of restaurants, coffee shops, and parks. Except that working at T...you will never be happy,
