Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Exception Denied

I work in CS&S, the largest org at Schwab. Apparently all exceptions in the ‘Other’ category, not related to distance from the office/commute time, are being denied.

My leader told me it was due to “fairness” so Rahul wouldn’t have to approve some and deny others. I’m sorry, but fairness is not giving everyone the same thing. Fairness is giving everyone what they need. Just more backwards thinking from upper management.

If you’re in CS&S and have an exception request out there not related to distance/commute (i.e. child care, elder care, personal preference, etc.), prepare for it to be denied. I wouldn’t be surprised at if this was the case firmwide.

And they expect me to just come back to the office and act like this never happened? What a joke…

@5xdm+1nyEnUoL - you have the smoothest brain imaginable for relying on 20th-century moralisms as an argument for a business decision that was motivated purely as a tool for backdoor layoffs. Newsflash boomer, everyone’s doing it because they are tanking and looking to save while downsizing. WFH is absolutely the future, whether you like it or not, and in a few years when the market has calmed down and most of these service jobs that aren’t phased out are remote you’ll get to complain endlessly about everyone being lazy from the comfort of your own home instead of in the cubicle next to us. Or just do us a favor and retire finally so we don’t have to listen to you whinge endlessly, that would be nice.

If your commute was always 2.5 hours and you were employed at Schwab before the pandemic started then you knew what your day would look like. You are still being asked to come in 3 days as opposed to the 5 days before. If your commute became longer during the pandemic that's on you. And if you started working at Schwab during the pandemic assuming that you will be able to work remotely for ever, then you are very naive. The pandemic was going to get over one day and Schwab for the right reasons values the in person interactions. Return to office is inevitable. Look around, it's not just Schwab. Being a mentor or a mentee is not effectively possible working from home.

I live 2.5 hours from my office and my request was denied because apparently my department “isn’t approving exceptions for long commutes” …

I've always heard that CS&S are kind of like corporate slaves. Team leaders hovering over you and the metrics are pretty unreasonable. I would think they want that control over people again.

EC keeps screwing the pooch on this. They waited to announce the office closures until 2 minutes after the exception request deadline. You might wonder why. If your team had 5 WFH exception spots available (18% quota), and 1 of those spots was taken by someone that is later part of an office closure, you don't get to reassign that spot to someone else on the team. You effectively lose a spot for this cycle. [WFH is a perm exception for an employee assigned to an office that has closed, and it doesn't count against the team's 18%.]

I fu----g hate this place now. I truly hope Schwab suffers. I won't be going out of my way anymore to help clients. Bare minimum until I leave.

Then why make an "other" category? Why is child care an acceptable exception?

I know of people that fit the distance category who were denied. In fact I have not heard of one person getting an exception.

The “exception process” has been totally misleading. The one thing leadership seems to be consistent about is continuing to mislead the workforce. It is disappointing.

These MD’s should feel ashamed, however they have no shame. Just like the EC they do not care about anything outside their paychecks. They have taken their orders and are working to get people to leave without paying them a package.

Walt talking about 25% of employees being remote- is more Schwab embracing their brand of misleading. At this point remote does not seem to apply to anyone outside of those with offices closing. Sadly, most of them will likely will be remote without a paycheck by the end of the year.

It is such a gross environment to work in. So so gross.
