Why isn't our manager the one who gets to decide who gets let go from our team? Who knows better than her who is an asset and who deserves to be let go? People who make these decisions are only guided by numbers and we end up losing great people because they earn more while those who need to be let go remain. That shouldn't be happening.

I assure you that directors and even many managers are being involved in the decision making process. If nothin else they are being asked to confirm decisions at higher levels. If you are a director and aren’t involved in any decisions, ummm. 👀
Unlike other companies, managers in Schwab below MD(old VP) level have limited power over their team. Manager can decide who to hire but cannot decide who to fire. They indirectly decide who gets let by go by rating their team every year. Unfortunately many managers feel bad in accurately rating their team hence sometimes good employees are let go.
Two words. Plausible deniability.
Because the EC only cares about saving money. They do not care what is best for you or your team or even the company as a whole. They don’t care about any of us at all. We are just numbers to this company and they need to reduce them. Simple as that.
