Unions typically don't protect exempt staff.

LOL that was a thought I had too. But, there were union associates RIF’d last week out of the Rancho Cordova office. What I’ve heard from RC close friends and coworkers: Being union helps with pay equity, etc. but it’s not a safeguard against a RIF. I also know a lot of very disgruntled people out of RC- dead weight is just as well-protected as hard workers, and advancement is based almost entirely on tenure, not dedication.

A union won’t help or should I say it’s too late. Companies have positioned themselves as “global” and can simply move jobs to other countries. The USA used to be the hub of knowledge (SME) with other countries doing grunt work, but that’s changed. SME responsibilities have slowly shifted to other countries and now the hammer will be dropped on higher paid knowledge work.

Legislation that targets cost is a remedy. For example, a tariff on labor. For that to happen, you’ll need to vote out just about everyone in the coming elections.

I agree.
But it looks when an industry can sponsor h1b visa, there is no union. I don't know why, have you notice this?
