Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

LR Yourself

You work for a tech dinosaur, once proud, now a woke husk of its former self. Leave already. Do it on your own terms or you will have it done to you. You can be pitcher or catcher...it's up to you.

Learning new skills and applying to jobs doesn't work like the movies.

Skills discrimination and being unemployed discrimination are as real as age discrimination and it's better to fight one form than all three.

Cisco is not a dinosaur.

Cisco's code hasn't been able to pass an Introduction to Data Structures class for at least 25 years. As a self declared "software company" you're dinosaurs riding a short bus.

it could come be great again but not under the current ELT.

How? Be specific.

Cisco is nothing more than a collection of acquisitions and Cisco did a great job assembling a thicket of companies leaving no niches for others to establish or maintain a foothold. The few "competitors" that exist today are at best a bit over 10% of Cisco's revenue each so if Cisco ran every one out of business they'd only double their revenue and any further growth would only be price gouging. IBM and Oracle actually were capable of original development at one time yet none of these dinosaurs have any chance of being the revenue leader of the tech world.

If you look at the tech leaders they all have direct access to hundreds of millions or billions of people. Even if Cisco had a technical path there (they don't) they don't have the culture. See Cius, Flip, Linksys, and the home teleconferencing system with the $60/mo fee to provide guaranteed bandwidth that failed so bad I can't even find its name with Google.

"Not everyone can. Some people over 50 struggle to obtain interviews due to age discrimination"

This statement is true. But you better plan your way out of Cisco, particularly if you are over 50. You may need to move. You may need to cut your expenses. You may need to take a job at lower pay. Take action.

Who cares. Nobody is coming out alive, we all die in the end. Make decent money and have fun with it while you still can. Ignore corporate politics and inefficiencies. You work for Google and like it? Good for you. I work for Cisco and I'm just fine.

Cisco is not a dinosaur. It still does some very important stuff. Networks and security are critical components of modern IT. it could come be great again but not under the current ELT.

Cisco has just become a company with no ethics no value for skills and experience.only recommendations.
Full of directors and mgmt folks who don't have any technical acumen.

Not everyone can. Some people over 50 struggle to obtain interviews due to age discrimination. Also many people are trapped on legacy products that external hiring managers don't care about.

Learning new skills and applying to jobs doesn't work like the movies.
