Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Closeout PMP time is upon us?

My boss says her travel and vacation schedule will be hectic this fall and we should schedule our final PMP closeout in the next two weeks. Is this normal? Holy cow.

While in the same job position, I would simply “copy and paste” the entire text from my last year PMP to the PMP for the current year. I’d just make a few minor modifications here and there to make it look “new”. If there were anything that was different this year, I’d include it and any accomplishments that were from last year, I’d remove. I really don’t spend more than 30 minutes getting my PMP finalized for the year. The most time I spend on the PMP are my summary comments at the end. The PMP should be renamed to the PITA (Pain In The A$$).

PMPs are a whitewash. Management loves to give make work assignments like updating this document which has no bearing on your rating. If you're a HiPot or on the to be recognized list, your PMP will wax poetic about how wonderful you are and how you actually invented sliced bread and solved the crisis in Ukraine. The remainder of the great unwashed will get a doing their job rating and a wait until next year reply.

No, @7sne, you need to get out and look around more. All Chevron hard work is done March thru June. March because that's when the year's PMPs have been set and everyone's gung-ho and enthused (especially after getting their bonus), June because that's when SR starts with the yearly budget cut requests, your boss (like OP's) starts asking you to 'update' your PMP, and rumors start flying around about layoffs.

On the first day of a suposive 3 year assignment ,my new female supervisor told me that as an expat I was already overpaid, and that my pmp rankings would be average no matter how well I performed.
I left for pastures new 3 months later.....

Ahh, September is upon us, the time of year when everyone throttles back their work effort to ease into the holiday season. For managers, budgets are done, now all they have to do is blow the dust off those pre-ordained rankings they came up with in April. Fill them in with a few June-July-August "accomplishments", sign off on them, and call it a year!

If you talk to people and listen to MW's Chevron story, he was not happy as an engineer his first several years and reportedly not very good at it either, so he quit to coach his kids sports team. He came back the next year with a new passion for coaching, as opposed to doing, and rode it to the top.

Any and all "bosses" who cannot manage thier job and time to prioritise their staff should be demoted or sacked.

Your seeing the impact of promoting people not qualified for their position but met the D&I criteria

I have had three bosses laid off, two busted back to worker bee status permanently, one told to find another job in the company, one quit for a better job, one quit for a worse job, and one fired for cause (fraud). A pretty good bunch overall.

Way too much time spent on PMP write-ups (my boss always wanted Ees to draft their own PMP, so they could add a few words and consider it a completed task). Getting feedback from peers and BU customers was useful but I sensed not valued by management. At the end of day, small cabal of key managers made the personnel decisions--- everything else was just paperwork/process

Your boss is not doing their job. Presumably they're not going to be paying any attention at all to what you're doing the next 4 months. There was a time when "vacation" was not an excuse for not getting your job done.

@1ysa, You took the words out of my mouth. The PMP is simply an annual evaluation of the employee’s key job responsibilities along with any contributions and notable achievements. It’s the documentary basis used to justify the employee’s eventual salary action.

Nothing you do matters anyway. It’s all predetermined. You just made the process a bit easier this year for your boss. The high pots get all the best ratings. Try not to fall into the bottom 20%.

The problem is I fell behind with kids at home all summer and now I am scrooed as I can't catchup in two weeks. I will get another average rating, no promotion, no pay rise, nothing. The year is lost.
