Thread regarding Pioneer Natural Resources Co. layoffs

If we join Exxon, we're screwed

I've spent a few hours over the weekend going over posts on Exxon's layoff forum and I didn't like what I saw one bit. The one thing that stuck out is that instead of layoffs, Exxon now pushes PIPs to save money. Employees put on PIPs either quit or are later fired without severance. Tell me that doesn't sound terrifying.

Exxon has a strategic to keep everyone till they have their people in place. They have brought in over 70 employees from overseas to step in when needed.Don’t believe anything exxon personal say about keeping everyone. When they say we have 20 yrs of drilling.Be prepared to slowly get fired. The oldest goes first.I work for XTO and seen exxon destroy a good company.

PIPs are absolutely 💯 real! People, friends, coworkers throw each other under the bus to keep employed! Period! Toxic! Worse than the PIPs are the constant reminder of drilling on you to identify what part of your work to document a workflow for and give your work to an id--t in INDIA by a low cost scab!! They have put 100s out of a job here under the guise of PIPS! Look at the EXXONMOBIL jib postings for INDIA and other low cost centers. They have a person or persons there doing every position in the company and are still growing substantially. There are other low cost centers doing land, payroll and everything you can think of, no position is safe! This is horrible for all of you!

I agree Pioneer will be moved faster to Spring than XTO. XTO was in a business XOM was not so they were left alone for 10 years. XOM wants Pioneer’s properties and not the business. So no reason to let things be.

XOM employee here who was at a different company that was acquired by a company other than XOM and I took the severance. I then ended up at XOM.

  1. Yes, this su-ks, period. Your whole world has been turned upside down due to forces you can’t control. It’s normal to be pi---d at the execs lining their pockets with the pain of uncertainty and movement. Once you yell into the void, start focusing on what you can control.
  1. XOM has 5 empty buildings on campus. This is not going to be welcome news but just telling the facts. With XTO it took them 10 years before they moved people to Houston. Given the open office space I think it would be a lot faster for Pioneer.
  1. PIPs are a real thing but since it’s forced ranking there are a couple of options. If you have a good manager, you will still have a job after the forced indignity that they involve. They didn’t want to give you a PIP, and they’ll see you through it. If you have an AH for a manager, it’s better to take the 6 weeks of pay. The manager will give you unreachable goals and you’ll be let go. However you could just phone it in for 12 weeks and get the pay while you look for work.
  1. The UNCON / XTO crew still has the culture that it sounds like Pioneer has. If you get moved into that area, it won’t be as big of a culture shock. XOM proper is a nightmare of a bureaucracy and my goal is never to take an assignment outside of UNCON.
  1. XOM employees aren’t necessarily excited about this either. My guess is Pioneer attracted good talent given how much people liked working there. We’ll be competing against you all during the eventual culling. There is not a lot of official communications happening on our side.
  1. My advice is to actively feel out your options. What jobs are available in your area, what options are available in the new world. If this happens, I doubt isn’t forced moves would happen in the first 12 months.
  1. Bonus advice, 12 months of severance is awesome but it can go fast. I saw people burn through their severance because they weren’t responsible about it and they didn’t hit the ground running when it came to looking for a job. I took several contract jobs to reduce the burn rate on my severance.

If I think of any more useful information I’ll post. Best of luck.

We will not have a job period. If you do happen to have the choice of staying with Exxon, are you willing to move to Spring? That’s the only option since they moved their offices a couple years ago. We are totally screwed. I’m 90% positive this is true just by going off how pxd has handled things since 2019. Not too mention SS gets double payout on his retirement per pxd financials. It’s not the pxd we knew in the past. Regardless of what we have been told over the past couple of years that SS has no intention of selling us out.
