You don't empower people with proper communication and action. But you still want people to be motivated. You are mediocre, but you want people to be excellent?

Ive had 10 managers over my 25 years , a couple were good, cared about you, actually asked how you were doing or how they can help , sometimes even have your back, but mostly its sending out 360s to the losers you work with to complain about the one time you made a harmless joke or sneezed. Once you realize your manager is your enemy and treat them as so you can actually get your job done and may manipulate a promotion cause it wont be merit based.

It all depends on your luck, I had very bad manager first time. Some very nice people working inside Cisco including some of the managers
