Your thoughts about joining Dell?

Im a masters new grad with 3yrs work experience in SWE before. I've been offered I6 as Sr Analyst, Data science at ATX with 150K as TC. I wanted to know how are the growth and technical prospects at dell for a new data science aspirant?

Dell is a terrible HR driven and politically driven company. It’s not an engineering driven company like EMC was. Dell is still a manufacturing company which is why their leadership doesn’t know sh*t about software delivery. If you are truly looking at a software engineering role, as others have said get some experience here, collect a salary, stay for awhile but then get the f-out. You’ll just get frustrated anyway.

I have my masters and have been with the company for 10+ years and still am not breaking the 100k mark. I also love my job for the most part. Take the offer!

I thought we are in a hiring freeze? How did you get an offer?

Don't join Dell or any OEM company (HP, HPE, etc.) for that matter.

You will get paid half of 150k as a junior engineer/developer.

I will say it again.

ONLY as a stepping stone. Keep your shoes and hat on at all times.

Look at those around you with 10+ years. They are sheep to the sla-ghter. Look into their eyes. There's a quiet desperation and dejection masked by an empty bravado

Not understanding the logic of the OP posting this to a layoff site? But I’ll answer anyway: Run. As far away, and as fast as you can. The Dell ship is sinking.

I wouldn't accept half a million to board this sinking ship of a company…

True, I'm a software developer at Dell and do less software development than I've ever done in any other company that I have worked for. I'm actually fearful for losing my skillset as it has dwindled so much. As a software developer at Dell, you have to be a developer, tester, handle triage customer calls, perform RPQs....so many activities that take you away from actual software development. Not too mention that most of the actual software development is offshored, so be aware.

if you want to work on new and innovative software then go somewhere else. Dell is no longer a leader. If you're looking to get a few years on your resume, then take the job but never stop looking for something better

Consider it a stepping stone only. ONLY.
Don't get trapped in the multi decade quicksand.

Dell is not the company to be for a data or software career. Take the job only if it’s a must for money or some other transition, but don’t stay long term.

Never, ever accept an offer from Dell based on TTC. I've been here in Sales for nearly a decade and the second the economy gets tough, they fully manipulate your TTC so you don't get paid.

Example: you have a 60/40 TTC mix. You get the 60% as expected, but there's no way in he-l Dell is gonna pay you the full 40% to fulfill your TTC. They are disgustingly notorious for manipulating quotas so nobody hits their full TTC. It's been HORRIBLE since covid

If you are serious and aren't trolling let me give you some guidance.

  1. Using a layoff site for this question will likely garner mostly negative response about your prospects and isn't going to be a good set of data for your question. You would be better off using things like Glassdoor or reddit.
  2. Dell is a large HW,SW OEM. It will be similar to other OEM vendors in its space.

When you do an interview you are also interviewing the company. Make sure you really dig in on how your manager approaches leadership. That will be one of the most important relationships that will dictate your experience. When you go through the rounds ask the other interviewers questions about the position and leadership for the team you would work in.
Like all global companies you experience will vary. Do the homework.
