Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Will I be laid off since i applied for an internal position?

Will my manager lay me off since i applied to an internal position but didnt get it. Now he knows that I am looking for other positions within the company and might give me the boot?

During our 1:1 he kind of seemed a bit upset and peeved that I had applied for another position but obviously his words were all supportive.

In my experience the manager had little input to who gets laid off.

OP here: Yes, I did speak to my manager and discussed in details my concerns before applying for the position. Also I have been in the same role for 3 + years.

Did you speak to your manager before you appiled? If not, you should have.

"If you(sic) manager truly saw a reason to be able to promote you, he would go to HR and practically demand it. "

This is a false statement. Your Manager could speak to the Director about whether they can add you to the promotion list. You most likely would need to have your SCALING SHEET already updated to say you would be a good candidate for promotion. There are a number of promotions available under your VP and once that is filled it's pretty much done for the cycle. Manager would never end run around the Director and go to HR demanding to promote you. HR just processes the promotion once it's been decided.

As for applying to an internal job, always tell your manager first as they will receive an email after you apply. But understand your name will be passed forward on the wfr list to the director when asked. Giving ANY name is gut wrenching but it helps your manager to make a Sofie's choice.

Ask yourself: "Do I deserve a promotion?"

I've applied to jobs internally before. I doubt your manager will let you go but truthfully, it's always best to be transparent with your manager. If you're not satisfied with your roles and responsibilities, your salary, your productivity, or processes within your team, you should voice your concern rather than not saying anything and jumping ship.

By the way, your manager saying there is no promotion opportunities is kind of misleading because it makes it sound like there is nothing he can do, which is false. But it can be true if HR refuses to provide that opportunity. If you manager truly saw a reason to be able to promote you, he would go to HR and practically demand it.

You literally advertised you have one foot out the door.

No matter how supportive they may come across as you are still seeking a break-up

Best keep on looking.

Also while I am the longest team member, I am the only one who is remote in the team. I dont know if that factors in his calculation as well. But oh well, I guess i can worry about only that which i can control.

OP here:

I did talk to him and he said he was supportive at the beginning, but then when i didn't get the job his tone changed a bit. My reasoning for job was: he has no promotions to offer and this was a promotional opportunity. Ever since them while he stated he is supportive, his attitude towards me has become colder and curt.

He asked me if I were looking outside as well, and I was just caught off guard. (I didnt say anything but it seemed he assumed that I was also looking outside) It just felt weird that he asked me that specific question.

Honestly no way around it.

You are going to bend their nose by looking outside their organization any which way you slice and dice it

Always talk with your manager before applying to a position internally. This gives them notice and shows them respect. Most managers will support you after this conversation.
