I'm curious because it seems that unless you know the right people, you have zero chance of making any progress at CVX.

I get promoted every year. It's good to have relatives in high places.
If you are over 55 at Chevron, you should be grateful you still have a job.
Experience and common sense mean nothing.
I have been promoted 4 times. The last time was 3 years ago. It definitely depends on performance and management who cares enough to fight for you to ensure you have opportunities to develop and move on and up. I have seen lots of folks move on to other companies due to poor management and bottle necking. I believe CVX is a good company, however some people make it hard to stay around.
If you are an experienced hire, the chances are less than zero.
I was promoted twice in my career. The last time was in 2016 when I kept my job and about 10% of the whole company were demoted. You see, a promotion can actually be a matter of perspective.
Average is every 3-4 years. Otherwise, why stick around?? If you flatline, change companies.
How many promotions should someone get? Every two years? Every 5? What’s average in the majors and across other industries?
it is obvious that the higher you are in PSG, then longer you will spend there. Everybody has a ceiling and unfortunately, it is not based on time. If we were all promoted every 4 years on a 30 year career there would be 1000's of PSG >28, which is not possible, financially nor merited. You guys need to accept that for many, the highest will be 24, 25 and 26, even if they give you 50 more years of working life.
High school diploma employee here and have made it to psg 24 after 17 years with the company.
Are you worried about promotions or having a job at all in 2024? I would focus on the latter and prepare for the worse. Mobilize. It's time.
My boss, who I think is a veritable high fligher in his field (wells) and is a solid hard worker, has been the same grade (26) for the last 10 years. This is how it ends for us technical folk, last 10-15 years at the same grade level (25 usually, 26 if you are lucky).
Once you get past year 10, if you're not in the high pot inner circle, promotions will be 5-10 years apart. After year 20, you'll be reminded that you're lucky to have a job, and you'll be fed the pablum that you're still getting (small) raises, and still getting a yearly bonus. MW's Chevron would rather churn through college hires than develop long-term employees.

Last week
Every non-high-pot is on the same "career advancement" track after about year 10. Those bragging about frequent promotions just means they were hired in at a low PG. (To be complete, high-pots are on the same, but elevated, career track.)
Every three years on average.
Promoted last year. I went a long time without one, but then I got in front of the right people and have been promoted twice since. Like OP said, it’s absolutely about who you know and work with. You still have to be a good performer, but the promotion ain’t gonna happen if you don’t know anyone who can help you.
