Forced RTO or Letting It Happen

There is irony in companies forcing their employees back to the office after four years.

Anecdotal evidence shows a few friends who had been working from home for years before Covid began growing a bit tired of the WFH life after about three years. After five years all of them were ready to go back to the office at least half time. And they did.

Forcing employees to RTO just as many of them began to consider returning on their own is going to force resentment and drive their feelings backwards. It’s like if you were just about to paint that room but then your spouse asks you hey when are you going to paint that room. Well it was going to be painted later today but now I am not sure when it will be painted.

Forced, scheduled day, fixed location RTO is one of the d-mbest things corporate devised.

But it isn’t about culture (yogurt has culture). And it isn’t about productivity.

It’s about getting people to quit and improving commercial real estate values.

The average worker will give 180 minutes or more to their employer in commuting time each week. And they’ll spend $20 or more doing it. They’ll increase stress levels, add to pollution and frequently interface with workers in other buildings or cities meaning they are still using Teams and sitting at a solo desk.

And that’s all bad. But the worst is the message. And it is crystal clear. We may pay you and hire based on exceptional decision making and knowledge, but when it comes to how you work and our egos we will dictate terms.
