Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Seriously, Is there ever going to be RTO?

People here have talked about it like it is imminent for the last 2 years.

Was recommended I relocate to SE Michigan when people started coming back into the office, just to meet once a week. But having recently moved to a new team, I don't even know what anyone on my team looks like with no future plans to ever meet in office. So I basically moved just to continue working remotely far away from any friends, family, or support system.

I'm indifferent to whether the work pattern is on-site 5 days a week, hybrid, or remote. I just dislike the ambiguity so I can plan other parts of my life (i.e., where to live, how often I'm commuting, etc.).

People here have also said it's coming when building projects get finished, but anyone I've talked to in person has no idea what the plan is and believe it'll be team dependent / flexible forever.

So outside of trolling and fear-mongering, is RTO happening or what?

The problem right now is there's not enough space for everyone to RTO. I was in one of the "collaboration centers" and it was packed. Hardly could find a parking spot. Where are all these people going to sit?

@1ihl+1qNezdSl - What about that leader in Ottawa with a foul mouth? Is he in the office every day?

Really...someone is going to down vote someone for getting their stuff stolen...nice. Speaks to the irrationality of some people on this board.

If RTO is mandated, I will not go back. Here's why: I went to the office and sat at one of the collaboration areas, only to discover there were no plugs to plug in my computer. I went to lunch and luckily took my computer with me. When I came back, my coat was gone. I checked with security a few times over the course of a few weeks and verified it wasn't turned it. So, if I have to go back, and have to have my computer and belongings tethered to me at all times, including when I go to the bathroom, that is more of a hassle than it's worth.

In Ottawa, one leader set an in office mandate and the attendance went from 31% up to 34%. The others don’t care since there is no consequence. Another leader here is watching and said this is what he expected would happen so he isn’t going to try it. Besides, the guys at HQ have no idea what goes on up here.

Attendance will be less than 25%. Another failed mandate.

Just absolute transparent Astro-turfing. No one I know wants to RTO. For what? So we can drive 2 hours a day in order to have informal conversations for 10 minutes and then WebEx with the global team? Give me a break guys.

Not going to happen. I will show up for an hour in the morning and leave for the rest of the day. I have jobs to do at home.

@OP. IDK how long you have been at Ford, but it seems you haven't been paying attention "lately". For the past 4 years, we have been going one way, just to stop and retrace our steps in the opposite direction.

Questions involving subjects like:

  • RTO, is it happening and when?
  • Layoffs, when and how deep?
  • Outsourcing, and future of the US white collar.
  • BEVs, when are we cancelling them?
  • Company bankruptcy, when or how to avoid it.
  • and many more, including technical everyday decisions...

are sidestepped or ignored by managers because NOBODY knows the answer. The "leadership", and I am using the term very loosy, have no clue what to do. Since they have no new ideas, they are deciding which company to copy, like they did previously with Tesla, GM and Toyota.

Since the C suite has no clue, they have no plans. Therefore, you shouldn't do any long term plan, besides the evident plan of leaving the company. In the meantime, just nod to whatever crazy thing they say in the TH, knowing it just BS from Fartley trying to pull the veil over the employees' eyes, so noone notices the cr-p.

How many days per week is Mexico, Brazil, India, and China showing up to Michigan in person to RTO?

I hope there is RTO.

I miss chatting with my coworkers throughout the day. We used to know each other and how our families were doing and what hobbies each other enjoyed.

Since we started working remotely it has only been 'work work work' whenever we connect digitally.

It'll be nice to have the chit chat time back.

You should quit and move back home. It’s not worth it for you to stay there.

Finally, normalcy is returning to Ford. Most of us are beginning to return to work in person in the office this week. The rest of you will follow, and soon. I view it as positive, the numbers will prove that RTO works. Collaborarion works. Company bottom line improves. Do your part.

If you don't, disciplinary actions will be instituted and leadership will have the data to prove it. This is no joke this time.

OP Looks like you answered your own question.

  1. RTO has started
  2. It is team dependent. Some job requirements need a person to be on-site more.
  3. 3-days a week has started for some teams.
  4. Companies do not want for example people living in North Dakota while working in New York. Seems this is the main reason for forcing RTO.
  5. If your job can be done from home you could request a permanent WFH agreement. No guarantees.

I will have to return to the office a few day a week. I guess will will have to manage my side jobs when I am in the office.

I hope not as I don’t want to go into the office and do t find it value added for what I do. I have seen that there are areas of the company that continue to hire remote and other areas are now indicating the position is hybrid.

FWIW, you have had time now to determine if being away from friends and family for a job is worth it to you. If it isnt, life is short and move back home while RTO isn’t mandatory. If I had to do it over, I wouldn’t have moved.
