Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

We stopped innovating

We stopped innovating and just milked dunks, AF1 and AJ1's etc for past several years. We used to do a good job at creating scarcity with those and keeping consumers wanting more. Now we wonder why consumers are ready for something new but we let them gorge our franchises last several years. Consumers are cyclical. They loved Yeezys they loved Stan Smiths. They rotate through franchises. But if you give them all to them all the time they will get tired of it and want something new. And we didn't deliver anything new. We may ramp innovation and pull new forward as fast as possible but it won't happen for several quarters.

@wgt+1qPdOn7f tells the truth.

@4thz+1qRWIOlx Agree with everything you said.... NSRL is going down hill because of its toxic leaders..... Who died that MS became Sr dir??! The research is suffering from her decisions

As a veteran of Nike innovation teams, when we were the kitchen, long before we became an acronym, there has been a toxic culture building for years. It’s not a shock that we are out of ideas when we are out of great creatives.

Toxic people in leadership positions have continually pushed out anyone that makes them look bad or threatens the status quo with newness.

Clearly I have survived as I am not a threat. Lol. Kind of tragic really ha!

But go and look at the recruitment history and subsequent departures of these ”leaders”. It’s a PhD for someone one day..

Maybe the NSRL should research that instead…..

@1pno+1qRWIOlx yet NXT refused to listen to the suggestions of the team responsible for business alignment and and just cut them, so I would take your point 2 and put it back on point 1.

@1pno+1qRWIOlx We keep innovation in LeBron secret because we have no clue what the f we are doing! As the other comment says here NSRL innovation is a joke

Kids have moved past Nike, it’s function not fashion (Dunk is the anomaly). The cool factor is gone because youth sports aren’t the only avenue of cool like they were for decades.

Times evolve….

Innovation at NSRL is a joke! 🫣 Toxic leaders who are clueless what they are doing and directors who are making wrong decisions one after the other! The only thing people care about is not to get into conflict with others!

As someone currently in Innovation, I can attest to the two biggest problems: poor innovation leadership and a lack of overall alignment with business teams. Leadership for the past several years has included a legacy dinosaur in TC, a strategy finance bro in SW, and a patent lawyer in JH. The recent failures aren't surprising when you couple that "leadership" trio with no formal way to connect innovations to the teams who are expected to take them to market. Innovation likes to keep everything locked in the secret vault that is LeBron and then throws new concepts over the fence, expecting business teams to know what to do. Failure on all fronts.

This is true and it’s hitting us - we went from first to worst. 44% of Nike shoes being discounted by retail partners - worst of any shoe company.

@1ckm+1qRWIOlx But we are Nike. Meaning: we convince them they want it. We don’t give them what they want we give them what they didn’t realize they need and convince them they can’t live without it.

You could argue a few of the innovations below could be seen in that light if approached differently with how the technology was presented in the franchises and how we marketed them.

What we aren’t doing, is investing in creating demand.

We do revamp and innovate all the time. I am the OP of the above and you are correct. What I should have said is we haven't innovated anything new they want in masses. We need to create the franchises of the future. All of our franchises were founded in sport and became Sportswear. When is the last time that happened? We focus on Sportswear creation where being founded in sport keeps us authentic and grounded in sport. What is the last shoe we put out that the masses wanted? The 270....the Vapormax? Well, you have to go back to 2018 for the 270 Launch and 2017 for the Vapormax Launch. Thats 6-7 yrs ago.

We revamp innovation and pull forward all the time, what are you talking about? There re so many things rushed out of Lebron James that aren't ready they are a headache for everyone involved and end up flopping.
