Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Would you wear both a suit and tie for your virtual interview?

I got displaced after working at Wells Fargo for 10 years, but I will be having a virtual job interview with a new prospective employer next week. I am not sure how I should dress in front of the computer camera. Some Google sites suggest wearing just a dress shirt and a tie, or a suit jacket without a tie, etc. because wearing both a suit and tie could be overkill. What would you wear if you were to have a virtual job interview with another company?

You can’t over dress for an interview, u less you show up in a tuxedo and a top hat. Wear a suit and tie, or at least a button down and blazer. I am a very casual person, but still take notice of what people wear to interviews.

If banking and executive level management, both suit and tie. Otherwise, begin to dress down. Blazer and a modern button shirt, no tie. Lighten up on these suggestions if you are in an area of the country that is a warm climate and the interviewers are also in that warm climate. BTW, it is ok to ask the person who contacted you about a dress code for the interview.

"This shouldn't even be a question. Then again, scrolling around LinkedIn would infer that piercings, tattoos, crazy hair, and weird clothes are 'okay' now among 'professionals'."

Look around on LinkedIn? Just look around at WF! We are inclusive you know - bring your whole self to work, green hair and face tattoos welcome.

Wear what you would wear if the interview was in person.

I'd wear the best of whatever outfit I plan on wearing after I get the job. For me, that's a button up long sleeve shirt, no tie or jacket. If a job requires a tie and jacket, I'm out.

Such a good question! No snark. Suggest doing some recon on any of their social media sites to get a feel of their in office and off site ( team bonding activities) dress code. Congratulations! Cheering for ya!

No need to be super formal but make sure to wear something decent, shave well, and make your hair clean.

Make sure your lighting, camera angle and audio are good.

If it is a “traditional” firm - suit jacket and tie are acceptable/not overdoing it, but a jacket/collared shirt/no tie, OR a shirt/tie but no jacket are also fine.

If it is smaller/less “traditional” - shirt with tie, or jacket with collared or t-shirt. Not a jacket and tie.

As silly as it is, and will feel, as a civilization we haven't come very far when it comes to job hunting rituals from decades ago.

So, unfortunately, yes, dress in clothes that you normally only wear to weddings and funerals.

Depends on the job. If tech job and if not finance don't wear a tie (at all levels). Getting a light and a good microphone are also key things.

Traditional/old industry dress shirt and tie. Non-dinosaur companies wear a buttoned dress shirt. Just look presentable, but make your lighting and background perfect. That to me will allow you to stand out more.

Yes, at least from the waist up. Why wouldn't you want to look sharp? You are selling yourself.
